As Geoffrey Chaucer said in The Canterbury Tales, "People can die of mere imagination." Living Manuscript strives to avoid letting people die of imagination by creating lifelike and immersive atmospheres primarily as 14th century English men at arms, we travel to events to show off techniques in fighting, warfare tactics, and to educate on similar topics.

I did it again...

Using a little bascinet I made years ago but never made use of, I built a bretache with attached perforated steel to safely use in sparring. As with my nasal, it's entirely removable and also includes some additional throat protection.

It will look much more complete once the aventail is constructed and attached, but I've been so excited to share it since finishing what you see here :)

My prototype nasal+mesh helmet in action at a recent private reenactment!

The mesh is removable by design so that I can still use the nasal for authentic purposes. I did mostly foam fighting with it at this event, but a little bit of light steel sparring as well. I was delivered a mighty thrust to the face and it stood up admirably. There's still some work to be done, but I'm also very pleased with the aesthetic :)

Just a little kit posting of this configuration I wore during a team skirmish event :)

It's a blend of historical and modern worn to achieve protection for all the parts that won't heal well, with the modern counting only as bodily protection, rather than actual armor like the historical pieces.

This make for fun fighting as I have more plate protection than some of the other skirmishers, but I'm not completely covered so I must be vigilant!

Something I was working on a few months ago. Still not finished, and I'm not sure if I'll keep them as they are or make them into more normal gauntlets and save the integrated version for later 😈. In any case it was fun to modify some off the shelf gauntlets :)

These arms brought to you by Dr. Pepper

I've been doing a lot more team battles recently where we use an armor-as-worn ruleset, and this has landed me in a situation where I'd like to outfit groups at a time. I figured what better way to approach this problem than making armor that historically was made in large numbers!

This is just the first iteration of a pair of early Almain Rivet arms (that last post about the breastplate was in a similar vein), but as long as our team battles continue I'll have bodies to armor up! I'm very excited to explore this style of armor :)

In the last year or two

Since my armory has been difficult to get to frequently, I've been focusing more attention on actually applying the armor in fights. These two photos were from our end of season skirmish finale :)

Thank you .gen.nick for the great pictures!

I love the way closed sallets open up! Especially when they make sounds like this. Initially the entire face was supposed to be able to be exposed, but that didn't quite work out.

said to post a project from 2020 that I'm proud of, well here it is :)

In the last few days before quarantine I scrambled to get this closed sallet done, its a mash-up of new parts and the skull/visor I made in 2017. Expect some kind of video to finally round out that closed sallet series, even though they're different helmets 😛

Looks like close sallets are BACK ON THE MENU BOYS

Giving my first sallet from 2016 a makeover, I'll repolish it, add some perf, and of course turn it into a closed sallet I can use for harnischfechten. I'll also be finishing that closed sallet video series from a while back using this one as a surrogate.

Apart from a few deliberate deviations, such as the neckline and number of faulds, I don't think the backplate is that far off. Some things could obviously have been done closer, but I'm very pleased with it despite that.

Demonstrating how a polished reflective finish can easily appear as of it's been blackened using the same lighting as we see in many historical paintings where the reflective surface of the armor is simply reflecting a dark interior, making it appear black.

In the first picture, the right side of the helmet is facing a wall of windows and gives it that "white" look, starkly contrasting th left side which is facing the inside of my apartment, and appears as a glossy black. Moving the camera to the entire left of the helmet, makes it seem as if it might be entirely black if you didn't know better.

I present: the Wisbypede!

Sometimes projects don't quite work out, these are all the plates from a failed coat of plates project for a friend. The fabric foundation wasn't strong enough and the shape of the plates could have been improved. The plates will return in another coat of plates eventually.

Some of my most recent work delving into the offensive side of medieval stuff! While waiting for welding wire to arrive I made this little dagger based on the X.226 from the Royal Armouries from an old broken dagger given to me by some friends. Not an exact replica since it's my first time with this sort of thing, but that's not so bad, there would have been plenty of variation between otherwise similar weaponry in the period I would imagine.

If you've not found him already, I would like to strongly recommend to you; he does some similar things as I do, such as armor projects and sewing. But one thing that I really like about what he does are the videos about the rest of the medieval world, such as the rise of the free cities. A very important part of our studies.

Critically, also subscribe to his YouTube channel Popula Urbanum, where you can find these videos 🙂
