Gardening was one of many ways Americans contributed to the home front to support the war effort. Between 1942 and 1945, Scouts established more victory gardens than any other youth organization for the war effort, and they had the green thumbs to prove it.

Thanks to our friends at the Albacore Park for sharing this great piece of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard history! You can learn more about the shipyard in our ongoing exhibit "From Sails to Atoms," on display through October 31!

On June 7, 1855 the USS Constitution arrived at Portsmouth Navy Yard Portsmouth Naval Shipyard - PNSY for an extensive overhaul. The ship was no longer in use as a warship. She remained there until 1860 when she was moved to the US Naval Academy as a floating classroom.

This photo taken in 1858 shows her in mid-construction.

On This Day:
The Allies Land at Normandy on D-Day

Tuesday, June 6, 1944. Beginning in the early hours of the morning, 156,155 American, British, and Canadian troops; 6,939 ships and landing craft; 867 gliders crammed with paratroopers; and 2,395 planes took part in the largest amphibious offensive in history. Operation Overlord – the Allied invasion of German-occupied Europe – had begun.

Facing heavy German fortifications and intense fire, the Allied soldiers had to fight their way up the beachheads. By day’s end, the Allies had gained a foothold in continental Europe. However, the fight was not over. The Allies then had to fight through dense hedgerow country before they finally pushed the Germans across the Seine River on August 30. The costs were high. The Allies suffered 226,386 casualties; the Germans 288,695 to 530,000 casualties; French civilians suffered too - 25,000 to 39,000 dead. This victory was only the beginning of a long, hard, and costly march to Berlin, but was the day that changed the tide of the war in Europe.
