Come and see the new addition to our historical collection: Wixom’s early Post Office! We are unveiling this piece of our community’s heritage on Monday, April 20 at the Wixom-Wire House, from 6 till 8 PM. We also will be displaying a photo of Wixom’s Post Office from the 1880’s…in a building you may recognize! We have post cards and letters from early residents, a 100 year old Post Office ledger, and the uniform jacket of Wixom’s telegraph operator! Did I mention the related story about the safecracker? You’ll have to come to hear it! Try out an antique embosser too. Free admission, open to the public, donations appreciated.

Did you know that the tradition of racing in Wixom dates back to the 1800’s? This photo, circa 1890, shows our local residents gathering for a bicycle race. Later, in 1899, the Milford Times reported that several hundred people attended a Fourth of July bike race in Wixom. These days, Wixom hosts a different kind of race: Derby Day! This very popular event takes place on Saturday, May 2 this year, in Sibley Park. See the Downtown Wixom page for more information. If you’ve participated in Wixom Derby Day in the past, post a photo in the comments. We’d love to add it to our historical collection.

Here are some photos from our Wassail, our annual old-fashioned Christmas party at the Gibson House. We enjoyed Christmas caroling and making Christmas cookies. We visited with old friends and met some new ones! Some of our friends brought family members, and we enjoyed their company as well! A special thank you to the very talented Wixom Christian School teen choir. The Gibson House was filled with the spirit of the season! Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all! (We had some extra excitement with a couple of cars stuck in the snow! All’s well that ends well! 😉😅❄️❄️❄️)

In Wixom, the area north of Pontiac Trail is part of Commerce Township. Do you see some of our geographical features in this map? Can you see where some roads would eventually be located? The first pioneers in the area that would later become Wixom arrived in 1830.

Early plat map of Commerce Township. 1832 Interesting to see the Steam Mill at Wall L Village identified.

Eric L. Palmer will be our featured speaker on September 15 at the Wixom Community Center. Did you get a chance to see him with his Mustang “RedTail” at the plaque dedication ceremony in July? We invited him back to Wixom, to tell us the history of the Tuskegee Airmen and RedTail. You’ll see how local history meets American history. This is an exciting learning opportunity for all ages. As always, open to the public. Free admission, donations appreciated.
