New England Air Museum

✈️ Last week, we were honored to welcome members of the Commemorative Air Force to the New England Air Museum during their visit to the region aboard the legendary B-29 FiFi.

After arriving at Westfield Barnes Regional Airport, the crew spent time with NEAM staff, board members, and supporters, sharing stories, experiences, and a mutual passion for preserving aviation history. We were especially proud to show them our own B-29, Jack’s Hack, and the ongoing restoration efforts that continue to bring her story to life. When one B-29 crew compliments another B-29, you know you’re doing something right. 😉

The visit was made even more memorable for NEAM Vice Chairman of the Board and Acting Chief Advancement Officer Bill Gonet, who not only spent time with the FiFi crew but also had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to ride in the bombardier seat aboard one of only two airworthy B-29s.

The visit reinforced the importance of collaboration in preserving these rare aircraft for future generations. We’re grateful for the opportunity to support FiFi and help keep her airworthy and flying for years to come.

We look forward to welcoming the CAF crew back again soon! ❤️✈️

Another school year is in officially the books! The NEAM Education Department served over 5,000 students from across southern New England for school programs this year, providing hands-on learning opportunities for students to engage in the history, science, and technology of flight. The teacher of one those students recently shared this story about their field trip experience: “This year, one of my students with special needs told me for weeks that he didn't want to go. He didn't give me his permission slip until the morning of, as his mom "forced" him to go. However, he participated by answering questions, was eager to create his model/test it and loved every minute of the tour as he flitted from aircraft to aircraft. He told me on our way back that this was one of the best days of his life. So, thank you for giving this experience to our kids!” The NEAM Education Department is grateful for the opportunity to support this student (and all students!) in fulfillment of the museum’s mission, and we look forward to seeing our school groups back again this fall.

The Albatross is finally showing its true colors again!

Thanks to the excellent work of the Albatross Restoration Team the aircraft is almost done and it’s looking great.

We are extremely lucky; not only do we have historic aircraft, we have volunteers that have shared history with those aircraft!

Yesterday, we honored volunteer John Gloria, who flew our Grumman HU-16 Albatross in Alaska when he was an officer and pilot in the Coast Guard. We are pleased to honor John for his service by displaying a plaque mounted on a JATO bottle with his name on it that will accompany the aircraft when it is put back on display.

Thank you, John, for your service to the museum and to the nation!

The Albatross team is very close to finishing this aircraft, stay tuned!

On D-Day and in the days that followed, hundreds of WACO CG-4A gliders carried troops, jeeps, artillery, and supplies directly into the Normandy battle zone. Built of wood, steel, and fabric, these “silent wings” were a remarkable wartime achievement. Connecticut played its part—Pratt & Read of Deep River built 956 CG-4A gliders, helping support Allied victory in Europe. The museum’s WWII glider display case incorporates original unused wood from Pratt & Read wartime effort.

While Allied soldiers fought for every yard of Normandy, P-47 Thunderbolts hunted roads, bridges, trains, and armored vehicles beyond the beachhead. Their firepower and persistence helped turn German reinforcements into scattered targets, giving the invasion a critical air support on D-Day June 6, 1944.

By D-Day, the Luftwaffe had already lost the battle for the skies. Months of relentless attacks by the U.S. 8th Air Force shattered German aircraft production, airfields, and fighter strength. Among the airmen carrying out these dangerous missions was Lt. Andrew Kata, who along with his crew of the “Damyankee” were among the B-17s lost in months following D-day. Kata survived as a Prisoner of War and later donated his jacket to the New England Air Museum.
