Join lecturer Christine Hauck for a program focusing on the American Revolutionary Era (1763–1783) and what the residents of Wilton in 1776 would have been listening to at the time. Christine will share her research journey to identify the top composers or music makers of the area and the types of music popular in 1776 from patriotic and marching songs to social and dance music, to psalms and symphonies.

Last night was all about saying THANK YOU!💛

We hosted our Annual Thank You Cookout to celebrate the incredible members, volunteers, and donors who make the Wilton Historical Society possible. We were so lucky that the rain stayed away, giving us the perfect evening to gather, enjoy some good food, and celebrate with so many of you!

Thank you for your continued support, dedication, and love for the Society. We’re so grateful to have you as part of our community and are excited to kick off another great year together!🌟

Here’s your Wilton Historygram!

The Cheese Spring Road neighborhood featured a typical mixture of heavily wooded plots interspersed with farmhouses, agricultural fields, and scattered sawmills throughout much of the 1800s. While apparently idyllic, the area is perhaps most famous for a grisly murder-suicide that took place on an isolated property straddling the New Canaan-Wilton border in 1898. The widow Susan Anderson was found in her own pig sty, somewhat over two weeks after she had been killed. The culprit – discovered hanging in a nearby tree – was her employee Frederick Hanahan. Besides killing Susan, Frederick had torched the house and barn. Newspaper coverage from the time suggested that Susan had been a difficult boss, withholding wages, denying food, and – in the past with a previous employee – even causing physical harm. Join us this Thursday, August 20th at 7:00 pm for a presentation by professor emerita and publisher Kathy Hermes.📚🇺🇸

The talk will explore how women contributed to the American Revolutionary effort politically, economically, intellectually, and even militarily. Using original sources like newspapers, court records, letters, and pension records, Dr. Hermes will show how Indigenous, Anglo-European, and African-descended women all helped to further the Patriot cause.
