Here’s your Wilton Historygram!

Marion Youngquist was born in the early 1930s and grew up in Cannondale. She may be Wilton’s oldest continuous resident. Can you think of anyone who has been here longer? If so please comment below. Marion’s mother, Florence Scribner Youngquist, grew up at 125 Scribner Hill Road, a house she would inherit from her parents in 1947. Florence’s father was a weaver for the Gilbert & Bennett Mfg. Co., supplementing his income with farming, livestock, and bee-keeping. Florence attended the Cannondale School and then Norwalk High School. As a young woman she worked for Gregory’s General Store in Cannondale before marrying Adolph Youngquist, a sheet metal worker from Bridgeport.

Wilton Historical Society Director, Nick Foster led attendees through a tour of Lambert House as well as eight other historic buildings.

The Wilton Historical Society mourns the passing of James “Hal” Higby, a close friend, supporter, officer, trustee, and volunteer of the Historical Society.❤️

A long time Wilton resident, Hal was active in several organizations throughout the Wilton community. As a member of the Historical Society’s Board of Trustees, he served as the Vice President of Finance, and made significant contributions to major Historical Society initiatives like the annual American Artisan Show.

Hal is survived by his wife, Judy and his three children.

To continue Hal’s tradition of philanthropy and service, the family asks that donations be made to the
Wilton Historical Society or to your local visiting nurse or hospice organization, in lieu of flowers.

From pumpkin decorating and games, to petting goats and enjoying c***r and donuts, there were smiles all around and so many wonderful memories made!✨🥰

Swipe to see our own rendition of the iconic King George III statue for the annual Wilton Scarecrow Fest!👑

On the night of July 9, 1776, a crowd emboldened by a public reading of the Declaration of Independence pulled a huge equestrian statue of George III from its pedestal at Bowling Green in lower Manhattan. A British officer conveyed the decapitated head to London, intending to demonstrate the patriots’ defiance, and soldiers transported the remaining fragments via Wilton to Litchfield, where the statue was melted down and recast as am******on for Continental soldiers. En route, loyalists in Wilton absconded with pieces of the statue, concealing them in fields, swamps, and cellars.

WHS members & visitors enjoyed a wonderful talk presented by University of Delaware professor Wendy Bellion last night!

The 6th Annual Great Wilton Pumpkin Fest will return to the Wilton Historical Society on Saturday, October 17th from 1 pm to 3 pm🍂✨🎃

It’s fun for all ages with all things pumpkin!🧡

Join knowledgeable docents in open hearth cooking, spinning, and blacksmithing in the forge, try out a handful of fall-themed lawn games, or explore the museum campus to complete the pumpkin scavenger hunt, all with complimentary c***r and donuts!☕️🍩

Here’s your Wilton Historygram!

This delightful artwork from the Wilton Junior High’s Touchstone (1966) magazine (which was just donated to the History Room!) is by Laurie Bepler (R) and Kathy Green (L). Inside, the students displayed their poetic, non-fiction, and short story writing skills. Tim Smith narrated a rollicking history of Wilton’s Cross Highway, aka Forty-Second Street. Hope Ostheimer contributed a stern haiku beginning: “Sly poison ivy / Don’t fool me with your beauty. / I know all your tricks!” Cary Turner wrote an uneasy meditation on anxiety: “It is frightening, fearful devouring! PANIC!” And for his part, Don Taylor adventurously declared “I would like to visit Timbuktu because many people talk about it, yet nobody ever goes there.”
