“My Baggage: Back to Wewoka” is now on display in the Margaret Jane Norman Art Gallery. Acclaimed Seminole/Muscogee installation artist and sculptor C. Maxx Stevens has returned to her hometown of Wewoka. The show tracks the artist’s life journey as a proud Seminole woman using vintage luggage and found objects to explore the concept of place. The collection touches on personal, environmental, and cultural themes—including life lessons, family narratives, Native identity, animal rights, and psychological perspectives on childhood experiences. The Smithsonian American Art Museum has described her immersive style utilizing dollhouses, shadow boxes, and mixed media as both “haunting” and “familiar”.

A little history of the museum's first Sorghum Day...

A mule, a sorghum mill, and a community willing to pitch in. That’s how a Wewoka tradition began! 🍂

Featured in the Sunday, October 4, 2026, edition of The Seminole Producer, this “50 Years Ago” article looks back at Wewoka’s first “Sorghum Day” at the Seminole Nation Museum. Neighbors helped feed the cane into the mill, local agriculture students helped grow and harvest it, and fresh sorghum syrup sold for $8 a gallon!

What began with those shared efforts has become a tradition that brings families, friends, and visitors together year after year. We’re grateful for the people who started it and the generations of volunteers who have kept it going. ❤️

From welcoming visitors and helping at the Museum to assisting with festival activities, food, set-up, clean-up, and everything in between, there's a place for everyone!

You don't have to commit to an entire day. You don't have to have special experience. Even a few hours of your time can make a tremendous difference. What matters is that you care about Wewoka and want to help make this year's festival a success.

Tomato-Can Stomp Dance Shakers — Available at the Museum

Two new sets of traditional-style tomato-can shakers are now available in the Museum Store. Designed for women’s stomp dance, each legging features 20 cans securely attached to leather straps—40 cans for the complete pair.

Each legging has two leather straps, with sturdy grommets for secure lacing around the leg. Handmade and ready for use by Eliza Walker.
