Niki Ketchman Fine Artist Contemporary artist and sculptor exploring the space between sculpture, craft, design and function. Connecticut | MA, Art Major, Montclair University.

Industrial forms, domestic materials, fiber, photography and digital imagery. I tend to work in series. Within each series the work is tied together by a theme or idea. My most recent series is the Resination Series. My Rose Series which consists of sculptures and digital prints is one of my largest. The rose is a pervasive image in life, literature, visual art songs and film. It can signify everything from love to war, from romance to death, from celebration to mourning and therefore seems a perfect image to use when addressing the passing of life, the passing of time. Sculptures in the Rose Series are made by sewing, weaving, draping and decorating and incorporating digital prints in the same way that my sculptures in other series have been made. A variety of materials are used including steel rods, wire, fabrics, vinyl cord, Aqua resin and more. Ideas about where art, function, craft and design intersect are on my mind. My sculptures are most often interactive if not necessarily functional in a traditional sense. One can sit on some sculptures or lean against others. One can walk into or through others. In this way the visitor experiences the work physically and well as visually.

Lastly, from the Whitney Biennial, I want to share Nour Mobarak's Reproductive Logistics. "She made casts of her body using resin, a synthetic material, and mycelium, the root-like structure of a fungus. Her series Recto Verso, on view at far right, reduces the body to a form—a vehicle for exploring light, color, and space. In Reproductive Logistics 4, Mobarak uses a cast of her pregnant body as a lens through which the room and bodies within it are mirrored, flipped, and distorted. She conceived the work as a meditation on how factors beyond our control can determine biological reproduction as well as artistic creation."

Next from the Whitney Biennial: "This sculpture is Malcolm Peacock's interpretation of a coastal redwood tree, which he encountered on multiple trips to the Pacific Northwest. Its surface comprises about 3,500 braids, which Peacock made by hand over ten months. As a long-distance runner, Peacock often explores ideas of endurance and performance in his work. The texts on the surface of the sculpture are excerpts from the autobiographies of Frederick Douglass and Malcolm X."

This is called She Must Be A Matriarch by Anna Tsouhlarakis at the Whitney Biennial show. "Overturning stereotypes, Tsouhlarakis offers an irreverent image of a female warrior armed with a mix of the mythical, the mundane, and the humorous, including spears, a wrench, menstrual cups, IKEA furniture, an Elder Wand that references Harry Potter, and a cartoonish cloud of inflated condoms."

Next from the Whitney Biennial, is Cooper Jacoby's Mutual Life pieces. He created them after his health insurance company offered him a discount if he took a genetic test that measured his "biological age"-an estimate of health that does not always correlate to the number of years someone has lived. The sculptures take the form of clocks, with minute and second hands made from real teeth. Each clock functions as a kind of portrait based on a different individual's test, tracking its subject's biological time by moving faster or slower than standard time.
