New Artist: Annie Darling ✨

Annie Darling was born in Chicago, Illinois, into an existing legacy of fine artists, including alumni and educators from Harvard, RISD, Cooper Union, and Boston College’s College of Art. Surrounded by photographers, designers, sculptors, print makers, musicians, and actors, art was a constant and defining presence in her life. Moving through the world with art as her interpreter, muse, and emotional outlet came both naturally and inevitably.

“I work with encaustic because it refuses obedience,” Darling says. “Wax responds to heat, gravity, and time in ways that are difficult to master, and I am drawn to that resistance. Each painting begins as a physical encounter—a negotiation between my body, the material, and the conditions of the moment. Rather than imposing an image, I stay alert to what the surface is asking for, allowing the work to emerge through action, reaction, and risk.”

Spotlight: New Painting by Russell Miyaki 🐕

Russell Miyaki is a contemporary artist and creative director in New York City. His studio is at Metro Art Studios in Bridgeport, CT, which is a renovated historic 1800s corset factory. A third-generation Japanese American born and raised in New Mexico, Russell attended school in Colorado, graduating with honors and majoring in advertising design and illustration. Throughout his career he has worked for design studios and advertising agencies, winning industry awards and recognition, from the One Show Interactive to multiple Webbys.

“My work embodies the simplest, yet most powerful expressions of positive energy, happiness, and fun. It represents an escape from the anger and unhappiness that seems all too prevalent in today’s world. My hope is that through my art, viewers are transported, if only momentarily, to a place of joy and serenity. In creating these visual affirmations, I am not just reconciling my emotions with the world; I’m offering an invitation to others to join me on this journey of hope and happiness.”

Russell works in oils, pigment sticks and acrylics on canvas, as well as wall board and plexiglass layers.

New Artist: Ruth Chapman 🐦

Ruth Chapman creates collages from papers she prints in acrylic using a gel plate and a variety of printmaking tools. Her creative outlet as a child was sewing, which she learned from her mom and grandmother, and those skills of designing, cutting, and assembling fabrics inform how she creates now - but using paper instead of cloth. Birds with flowers is a recurring theme in her work, celebrating renewal and the quiet beauty of everyday life. She graduated from Kenyon, has a master’s from Northwestern, and has studied art in studio classes and independently. She’s an Exhibiting Member of the Rowayton Arts Center and has been published in the design magazine UPPERCASE (2025, 2023, and 2021). Her work lives in private collections in Connecticut, New York, Nantucket, and beyond.

We have new paintings in Mary Gaspar’s Plant Cell series… 📣

About the Plant Cells:
“I have always been fascinated by the hidden architecture of the botanical world. Within every plant cell exists an intricate universe, rich with movement, structure, and life. Through this series, I explore those unseen landscapes using delicate linear forms and the fluid nature of watercolor.

“As pigment travels through water, it separates, converges, and transforms—mirroring the organic rhythms of living cells. While the compositions appear minimal, they are intended to suggest expansive internal worlds that exist beneath the surface. At their core, these works are about connection: our relationship to nature, to ourselves, and to one another.”

Mary Gaspar is an abstract artist based in Wilmette, Illinois. After studying painting at the Evanston Art Center, she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre from the University of Illinois, where her education deepened her understanding of composition, movement and visual storytelling. Her signature Plant Cell series emerged during the early years of motherhood, as an outlet for an overwhelming surge of creative energy. What began as a deeply personal exploration evolved into a body of work that serves as the foundation for her practice today.

Just Arrived: New Encaustic Paintings by Linda Bigness

Linda Bigness is an internationally exhibited artist who maintains a gallery/studio in Syracuse, New York. She explores the abstract through surface manipulation using encaustics and oil and is currently working on a new series, the “Journey Stones Revisited,” that reflects her extensive travels through the United States and Europe. Bigness’ large scale paintings are often selected and commissioned for residential and corporate clients including Turning Stone Resort, Merrill Lynch Corporation, Haylor, Freyer and C**n, and Bausch and Lomb.

Artist Spotlight: Carol C. Young 🏡

Carol C. Young is a landscape painter working in acrylics and oils. She is a plein air painter as well as a studio artist whose contemporary work is primarily identified by a bold use of light and shadow along with iconic depictions of structures within the rural landscape. A fine arts major at the College of New Rochelle, NY, her paintings have won several awards including best in show at the Pequot Library Art show in Connecticut, first place in the acrylic division at the Rowayton Arts Center in Connecticut, and second place for acrylics/oils at the Mary O. Fritchie Art Show in Westhampton Beach, New York.

New to Sorelle: Meet Nancy Wu and Jean Davis of Resurrect Studio ✨

Resurrect Studio (Nancy Wu and Jean Davis, Co-Founders) creates sculptures from Victorian-era NYC landfill glass that collectively narrate a tale of hope and inspiration, blending elements of the sacred and the profane. They collect glass fragments decomposing in the bay that have been tumbling for a century. Depending on the tide, the inventory varies greatly like the catch of the day. Fragments are sculpted into “3D watercolors.” How has one generation’s garbage become another’s gemstones? What will our children be mining? Resurrect Studio’s non-traditional approach to glasswork is aimed at finding the transcendent in the everyday.

Nancy Wu and Jean Davis co-founded Resurrect Studio LLC in 2021. Nancy holds a Master’s in Architecture from the New Jersey Institute of Technology; Jean received a Master’s in Art Therapy, is a tenured professor at Pratt, and maintains a private practice. Their complementary artistic backgrounds fuel their collaborative practice. Resurrect Studio’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in various venues including The Venice Glass Week (Venice Biennale 2025) and the Brooklyn Museum, and featured publications such as New Glass Review and Glass: The UrbanGlass Quarterly. This award-winning duo invites audiences to see forgotten materials anew, illuminating what was lost and celebrating transformation, memory, and meaning.

Artist Spotlight: Sofie Swann

Sofie Swann is an American artist, born and raised in Tehran, Iran. Displaced at a young age due to political upheaval, her abstract paintings reflect a chaotic yet structured world mirroring inner feelings of dislocation and disconnect in her journey to find a place called home.

Her sources of inspiration are memory and the subconscious, drawn from her childhood all the way to her adult life experiences living for many years in Boston, Massachusetts, then Paris, France before finally settling in Connecticut. Swann graduated from Smith College, holds a law degree, and studied art at The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts.

Spotlight: Shake the Pear Tree by artist Juniper Briggs 🍐

Juniper Briggs is a mixed media painter with a focus on abstract faces and figures. Presently based in Northern Virginia, Juniper grew up in a community of artists in the Mountains of North Carolina. It was there, surrounded by glass blowers, potters and painters, that she first learned to appreciate art. As a young adult, her international travels (particularly to Mexico and Spain) impacted her love of folk art and Cubism.

Pulling stylistically from both cubism and the classics, Juniper’s work offers a modern and decidedly feminine color palette and perspective. She is fascinated by the juxtaposition between the confidence we present to the world verses the wilderness of emotion we contain within.

“My work seeks to call attention to the beauty hidden within ordinary moments of pause,” Briggs says. “Whether that’s stopping to think something over, spending time with friends, enjoying the warm sunshine on your skin, or simply smelling the flowers. It’s these unassuming, often overlooked experiences that I am most drawn to exploring in my paintings.”
