It is wonderful to see the Winslow home currently being renovated.

John Winslow Sr., came to Dover by 1850 with his wife Ann (Silverthorn). In 1856 he bought property near Dover Center and Center Ridge; in 1862 he acquired 8½ acres on the west side of Dover Center Road, including land where Porter Library and its south parking area are today. When John Sr. died in 1883, much of that property passed to George. George later acquired another 18 acres and built the house at 2940 Dover Center in 1890.

A Piece of Holly Lane History

For generations of Westlake children, the big metal cannon at Holly Lane was simply part of the landscape — something to climb on, sit on, and remember. But the story of how it got there is a wonderful little piece of Westlake history.

In the spring of 1966, a group of Westlake mothers participated in product testing for Procter & Gamble in Cincinnati. The money they raised through their efforts was used to purchase a rather unusual gift for the children of Holly Lane School — a 650-pound steel playground cannon!

A West Life article from December 7, 1966 reported that the cannon would be anchored in cement on the hill behind the school when weather permitted. At the time of the photograph, it was still sitting in the school’s front hall.

Pictured astride the brand-new cannon were Monica Potter, John Biddas, Melanie Potter, and Jim Twigg.

Holly Lane School itself is now gone, but remarkably, the cannon remains on the grounds today, still part of the familiar landscape and a tangible reminder of the school that once stood there.

Sometimes local history isn’t found behind museum glass. Sometimes it’s been sitting on a hill in the neighborhood for 60 years, waiting for its story to be told. ❤️

Although the rain dampened our Fall Yard Sale a bit today, it certainly didn’t dampen our spirits!

Westlake Historical Society

Please join the Westlake Historical Society on Friday, September 11, as we gather at Evergreen Cemetery to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and to honor the lives of those who were lost.
We will gather at 8:30 a.m. at the grave of Christina Ryook, a Westlake resident and WHS graduate who tragically lost her life in the World Trade Center.
Since 2004, the Westlake Historical Society has gathered each September 11 to remember Christina and to honor all those who perished that day. As we observe this significant 25th anniversary, we invite members of the community to join us in quiet remembrance and reflection.
