On this date, in 1884, R. Guy Cowan was born in East Liverpool, Ohio. In 1912 he founded the Cleveland Pottery and Tile Co. in Lakewood, Ohio, and went on to become one of the most influential artists of his time. Since 1978, the Rocky River Public Library has housed the Cowan Pottery Museum, which features over 1,200 pieces from R. Guy Cowan and his associates at the Cowan Pottery Studio. Vases, bowls, sculptures, and so much more are on display on the first floor of the library. So next time you come in for a book, movie, or comic, be sure to take a look around. There is art history all around you waiting to be discovered. Happy birthday R. Guy Cowan.
