WHAT?! We have a gallery?! Well, yes, at least for a while. Popping up this weekend 1286 Washington Street in West Newton, Massachusetts Saturday and Sunday May 30 and 31 from 10:30 to 5:30. We are calling it the Ampersand Gallery because we are about so much more than a printmaking studio. We are a community of creative colleagues. Come check it out.

4, 2-day sessions: Tuesdays & Wednesdays
June 2nd & 3rd, 9th & 10th, 16th & 17th, 23rd & 24th, 9:30 AM - 3 PM
Includes all materials and access to the papermaking facilities outside of class time for the month of June.

This 4 week course will give you a firm foundation in 4 of the most common papermaking fibers: Cotton, Flax/Linen, Abaca and Mulberry. Learn about the plants, fabrics and history of each plant from master papermaker, Akemi Martin, who has spent the last 20+ years working with these fibers, spending each week focusing on a different fiber and exploring the creative range of each material. Learn how to prepare and cook fibers, how to hand beat mulberry pulp and different sheet forming techniques. You will leave with paper samples, pulp paintings, sculptures and more. In addition to class time, weekly Open Studio is included in this course, to allow time to further hone skills learned in class.

Working with both paper and cotton fabric, they learned to coat surfaces with UV light sensitive solution and best practices to make Prussian blue and white prints. In this hands-on workshop, we explore the Zhen Xian Bao—the traditional Chinese thread book—an ingenious folded structure historically crafted by women to hold needles, threads, seeds, and small domestic treasures. We will begin by honoring the origins of this form, looking at its cultural history, regional variations, and the often-unrecorded lives of the women who made and used these intimate, functional books.
