Rip Van Winkle Reader's Theater Presentation

A unique performance of Rip Van Winkle will take place in the drawing room at Piatt Castle Mac-A-Cheek on Halloween weekend.

This classic tale has an approximate running time of 50 minutes and is intended for adults and older youth.

Autumn Games & Halloween Customs

Saturday, October 24, 2026 | 4:00 pm

This outdoor event lets you have fun with nature as children used to do by making corn husk dolls and playing games with acorns. Explore stations where you can learn how bats became associated with Halloween and read some corny jokes! Learn about Halloween customs and hear/participate in spooky stories that are appropriate for all ages. Help us scare the ghosts by coming in costume!

🌱 Youth Program Spotlight: Groundwork Ohio River Valley🌱

We were thrilled to welcome Groundwork Ohio River Valley to Days of Service: Ohio Habitat Heroes at Piatt Castle Mac-A-Cheek!

Groundwork ORV is helping prepare the next generation of environmental leaders through hands-on conservation, environmental education, and career readiness opportunities.

Their Green Team program gives high school students experience working in parks, trails, and community spaces while building skills that can lead to careers in the growing green industry.

That mission made Groundwork ORV a perfect fit for Ohio Habitat Heroes.

During their visit to Piatt Castle Mac-A-Cheek Valley, participants had the opportunity to put those skills into action by helping remove invasive honeysuckle and restore native habitat, while also connecting with environmental professionals and exploring conservation career pathways.

We are grateful to Groundwork Ohio River Valley for making the trip to West Liberty and bringing their experience, enthusiasm, and commitment to environmental stewardship with them.

Thank you for helping us show young people that caring for our environment can be more than a day of service. It can also become a pathway to a future career. 💚🌿

🌿 School Spotlight: West Liberty-Salem Local School 🌿

West Liberty-Salem high students showed up ready to learn, serve, and get their hands dirty during Days of Service: Ohio Habitat Heroes at Piatt Castle Mac-A-Cheek.

Students worked together to remove invasive honeysuckle and help improve the natural habitat surrounding our historic site. Along the way, they explored environmental careers, participated in hands-on STEAM activities, and connected what they were learning to real conservation work happening right here in Ohio.

We loved seeing their teamwork, curiosity, and willingness to jump in and make a difference.

Thank you, West Liberty-Salem, for helping us care for the Mac-A-Cheek Valley. We were proud to have you as part of our first Ohio Habitat Heroes experience! 💚

THANK YOU to everyone who participated in our Days of Service: Ohio Habitat Heroes & Open Doors event which took place September 15th and 16th.

West Liberty-Salem Local School, Urbana City Schools, Groundwork Ohio River Valley, ALL of our speakers who talked about environmental career paths, and anyone else who helped in any way, you are our HEROES!

Students and Open Door visitors were treated to a tour of Piatt Castle Mac-A-Cheek, interactive STEAM stations, free meals and t-shirt, learning and networking opportunities and a chance to participate in environmental stewardship by removing invasive honeysuckle and restoring native habitats.

Paris Walton, our executive director, created this opportunity with support from Columbia Gas of Ohio, NiSource Charitable Foundation, and 4imprint, along with the Columbus Foundation, Piatt Castle, and the Mac-A-Cheek Foundation. A big thank you to all of these organizations who made these two days possible.

It was an AMAZING experience for both students and adults and let us THANK the participants and sponsors one more time for this unique opportunity!
