CapeFLYER Reaches Record Ridership for 2026 Season

16,045 passengers travelled on popular train between Boston and Hyannis
The MBTA and the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority (CCRTA) today announced that the popular CapeFLYER train service reached record ridership for the summer 2026 season. With a 7% increase over the 2025 season, 16,045 passengers travelled between Boston and Hyannis on summer weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day this year.
“More people than ever chose the CapeFLYER this summer, helping more visitors experience Cape Cod and support the local businesses that make it such a special destination,” said Governor Maura Healey. “We’ve made investments in our Commuter Rail to make it easier for people to get where they need to go, whether that’s getting to work or enjoying beautiful destinations like the Cape. That means more transportation options for riders, fewer cars on the road, and more support for communities across the Cape. We’re going to keep investing in reliable, convenient public transportation that makes Massachusetts a better place to live, work, and visit.”
“Massachusetts and the Cape have so much to offer, and we’re pleased that so many left their cars at home and took advantage of CapeFLYER service this season,” said Interim Secretary of Transportation and MBTA General Manager and CEO Phillip Eng. “Under the leadership of the Healey-Driscoll Administration and with the support of the Legislature, the MBTA and MassDOT are grateful to support local economies and reduce traffic congestion by providing connected mass transportation services to Cape Cod with our partners at Keolis and CCRTA, and we extend a big thank you to the thousands of new and returning passengers who trusted the CapeFLYER as their preferred way to travel to the Cape this season. These exceptional ridership figures are a great reminder that public transit supports all kinds of travel, from commuters to vacationers to those travelling with friends and family to fun events all year long, and we hope passengers continue to choose the Commuter Rail as their preferred way to travel to events throughout the Commonwealth, like Salem’s upcoming Haunted Happenings this fall season.”

Kennedy. “More and more travelers are choosing to skip the bridge traffic and enjoy a relaxing ride to the Cape. The CapeFLYER isn’t just a scenic train ride – it’s the start of a Cape Cod vacation, and CCRTA buses are FREE once you arrive.”
The CapeFLYER is a unique partnership between Keolis, the CCRTA, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) to improve access to Cape Cod for residents and visitors.
CapeFLYER service has operated since 2013. The train travels between Boston’s South Station, Braintree, Brockton, Lakeville, Wareham, Buzzards Bay, Bourne, and Hyannis. The train includes a bicycle car with racks and tools as well as a café car featuring snacks and beverages.
The trip from South Station to Hyannis takes about two hours and forty minutes.
