Three Pieces of the Past.. One Photograph 📷

October 16, 1969

Three pieces of history all caught in one photograph:

🚨The little police building for Watkinsville
💧 you can see a leg of the old water tower.
🦅And the Eagle Tavern, quietly standing behind it all.

Two are gone now. One remains.

And somehow, this little photograph lets us see them together again.

That’s the fun of old photographs—you have to slow down and look around. There’s always history hiding in the background. 🦅

📷Thanks to Debbie Yarbourgh for sharing this great photo with us!.

Have a pic with the old Eagle in it? We'd love to see it!

🐎 Horses, Hitching Posts & History 🐎

Imagine standing here in Watkinsville around 1907…

🐴In the foreground, a hitching rail waits beneath the trees—ready for the horses of travelers making their way through town.

🦅And just beyond it stands the Eagle Tavern, then known as the Eagle Hotel.

For generations, this was the rhythm of travel. Ride into town, tie up your horse, and step inside the Eagle.

🍽️Perhaps you were stopping for a meal, meeting someone during court week, or simply taking a much-needed break from the road.

🔎Look closely at this photograph, and you can almost imagine the sounds that would have filled the space—the footsteps, the horses, the wagons, and conversations drifting from the hotel.

Today, we drive through this same area without giving much thought to how different the journey once was.

💖But just for a moment, this photograph lets us remember.

The horses are gone. The roads have changed, but the Eagle is still here waiting to welcome the next traveler, just as it did more than a century ago.

📷Thank you, Mr. Bill Craig, for sharing this wonderful piece of local history with us!

🚒WHEN THE CALL CAME ….

🚨Before modern fire trucks, sirens, and all the equipment we know today, answering a fire call looked a little different.

Here’s an old Town of Watkinsville Fire Department truck, loaded with equipment and ready to go.

🔍Look closely at the photo, and you’ll see more than the truck.
You see the men who answered the call.

🦅The old buildings lining the street behind them.

👀Do you spot the Eagle before rediscovery/rennovation?

These were the people who showed up when their neighbors needed them.

No fancy equipment. No modern technology. Just a truck, a crew, and a community willing to help.

📷This photograph is courtesy of Debbie Yarborough, who stopped in, sat a spell, and was gracious enough to share her old photos and memories with us.

Have a photo with the Eagle Tavern in it? We would love to see it!

History isn't just about the big events… it's about the people who were there....who lived it... who made it.

🔎 HISTORY’S MYSTERIES

📖We found this photograph tucked away in the Eagle Tavern archives—and, well…we don’t know much about it!

🤔No date. No names. No notes. Just a great little glimpse into the past.

👀 But look closely…

🦅To the left is the Eagle Tavern, before its restoration and rediscovery.

🏠 The house behind the group once stood where Blind Pig Tavern-Watkinsville is located today.

💧 And those legs you see between the two? Those belong to the water tower that once occupied that space.

So many layers of history can be found in one photograph.

Now the question is…who are these people, and what brought them together?

If anyone recognizes a face, an approximate year of the photo, or any clues, we’d LOVE to hear from you! 👇
