Walk through of MARY LYNN BURKE: SENSITIVE SEEDS, current daily soundtrack on loop is Mary Lattimore and Julianna Barwick’s new record Tragic Magic Mary Lattimore julianna barwick

SENSITIVE SEEDS is a show to be experienced in person. For those Vt locals still unaware, particularly all our lovely wellness, massage therapist and acupuncture business neighbors: for over a year and a half now we keep the Phoenix open intentionally unstaffed (monitored by security cameras TREEHOUSE ) to create a sanctuary-like experience with the art. We mention our therapist neighbors because we can’t think of a better post-appointment activity than a quiet walk through of our village center art gallery. The ambient soundtrack is 🤗

This model was inspired by the Rothko Chapel in Houston, Tx, where our owner/curator Joseph Pensak spent two annual week long study retreats. The loveliest part about this model is that it makes the Phoenix truly in line with our intentions of starting the Phoenix almost four years ago—to be a commonspace for free and public enjoyment of museum quality art shows and music that you’d get in NYC, Chicago or Montreal. If you’ve never seen yourself as an art gallery person, our goal is for you to see yourself in an art gallery, at the Phoenix! Weekly. Make it part of your Wednesday evening Passeggiata, your one hour “I need a break” village stroll or your Sunday afternoon “I just woke up and want something quiet and reflective and sacred” (open 12-6 every Sunday, 12-6 every other day except Saturdays and Mondays).

Lastly, if you are retired or otherwise free on Saturdays, we would like to start regularly staffing volunteer gallery sitters/docents so if you’d like to do a regular shift for one or two hours, learn about contemporary art/what it takes to sustain an art gallery in Vermont and be a part of this special commonspace we have in the center of our village, we’ll give you all the training you need! Our desk and iMac are avails for you to get some work done or just bring a book and read! What a dream space to hang out in, while having fun convos with the walk-ins, letting them know about the art/artists and all we do

Curator’s statement for SENSITIVE SEEDS.

Come enjoy a sanctuary-esque, unbothered, and quiet experience with the art. Inspired by the Rothko Chapel in Houston, TX, we intentionally open the Phoenix unstaffed so you can have a richer connection with the art without sales pressure. The gallery guide and price list on the front welcome table has lots of information to lead you through the show, and if you’d like to talk more about the art or have specific questions, walk over to TREEHOUSE across the crosswalk to Main Street, where we have additional pieces by Mary Lynn Burke (Brzuchanski) and many other brilliant artists. You can talk directly with curator Joseph Pensak, who will be happy to help you if you are interested in purchasing a piece from the show or just want to know more about Mary Lynn’s process and influences.

For you perplexed souls. security cameras are on at the Phoenix and are monitored/recorded from TREEHOUSE by curator Joseph Pensak.

Come see SENSITIVE SEEDS today, open 12-6pm, 5 Stowe Street, Waterbury Village, Vermont.

Thank you to everyone who came out to the opening of MARY LYNN BURKE: SENSITIVE SEEDS! What a gorg night with Kai Fukuda filling up the space with his gorgeous playing on the 1929 Steinway and how fun to have the Schultz family reunion (co-owner Anna Black’s family) happening on the same weekend so the opening doubled as a welcome party for family flying and driving in from all over the country! Thank you Mary Lynn Burke (Brzuchanski) for sharing your fierce colors with us in Waterbury for the next six months, we are already SO moved and inspired. SENSITIVE SEEDS will be on view 12-6 every weekday plus Sundays, closed on Mondays and Saturdays except for when concerts, rentals or our own events are happening.

Today we’re continuing to host the Found Around Consignment so come check out the curated collection and DM Isabel to consign your own clothes.

This coming Friday 8-late we’re bringing back dance parties to the Phoenix with FLOW STATE, get tix online at Seven Days Tickets from www.thephoenixvt.com or at the door. Thank you Joe Thornton for all your work to relaunch this monthly series, and come out and dance your hearts out with us, we NEED THIS ya’ll.
