Congratulations to Bill Myers and his staff the at Oliver Nestus Freeman Roundhouse and African American Museum (Wilson, NC) on the expansion of your facility to accommodate the official portrait and library of retired Congressman G. K. Butterfield. Such a fitting tribute to a life dedicated to serving his hometown. Congressman Butterfield has entrusted his legacy into good hands.

Looking through some of our America 250 materials today, I found these jewels. Most students of my era would certainly remember the children's book, Paul Revere's Ride. As a matter of fact, we likely remember learning to recite the entire text in both upper elementary reading and high school English classes. I can hear it now, " Listen, my children and you shall hear, of the midnight ride of Paul Revere. . ." ☺️ In the backdrop are more serious texts that chronicle "Black Heroes of the Amercan Revolution" and history of the colonists' battle to free themselves from England's tyranny and unfair taxation caused by debt associated with the French and Indian War. One bloody skirmish in defense of colonists, was lead by Crispus Attucks, a runaway slave who had become a seaman. Stop by and catch up on your reading. Open M-F 11AM-3PM 👍

WASHINGTON HISTORY MADE
On September 14, 2026, another chapter was added to Washington, North Carolina’s African American history with the dedication of the Dr. Julius Q. Mallette Medical Complex at Agape Health Services.

The occasion marked a significant local milestone: the Dr. Julius Q. Mallette Medical Complex is the first medical facility in Washington’s history to be named in honor of an African American.

Dr. Mallette devoted his professional life to healthcare and service, touching thousands of lives throughout his career. (Including the delivery of 4,000 babies) Dr. Mallete's widow, Sharon Mallette what the naming of this facility meant to the family. The naming of this facility ensures that his legacy of service will remain a visible part of the community for generations to come.

As we preserve the stories of those who came before us, we also recognize that African American history is still being made—right here in Washington.

It is with deep sorrow and great appreciation that we take this moment to remember, "Miss Mae" (Rogers). She was one-of-a-kind and a true spiritual blessing to all who knew her. The Museum was honored to have her MC our Mass Choir Concert during Beaufort County Community College's 2026 Black History Month Legacy Celebration.

She was an Icon at the Annual Juneteenth Celebrations, taking full charge of the Sunday Gospel Entertainment.

You are so deeply loved, Miss Mae. You are so deeply missed! Words cannot express the depth of this loss to our community.

We are proud to announce the AWARD OF 20 SUMMER CAMP GRANTS to students of P. S. Jones Middle School. Applicants could register for up to $500 to assist in paying for a summer camp of their choice.

Thanks to the principal and staff of P. S. Jones Middle School for getting the word out and collecting applications. You are an itegral part of expanding these students' horizons for summer adventures.
