1 piece of jewelry can be worth more than an entire estate.....you need to accept that.
Homes, stocks, gold, and silver all went up in value in the past few years so a common way of thinking for many folks over the age of 60 is, "My china set, heirloom portrait painting, oak furniture, and that Asian bowl I bought from Macy's in the 70s should have gone up in price too, right?"
Unfortunately no.
The most difficult part about my job is letting my clients know that the items they purchased in the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s have not appreciated since they bought them. Several factors play into this; however, on the bright side, many other investments they made have gone up in value.
Gold and silver are a great way to recoup losses. Even though antiques and collectibles should never be seen as investments.
Overall, what makes a great estate sale is a mixture of items that appeal to all types of customers:
1.) Garage items and tools
2.) Misc. household items worth under $10
3.) Oil Paintings by "listed artists"
4.) Mid-Century furniture
5.) Asian antiques pre-1900
6.) Funky glassware
7.) House plants and outdoor patio décor
8.) Outdoor furniture
9.) General collectibles with a value over $100
10.) Vintage and antique toys
***Gold and silver jewelry is never in my sales. Its purchased and sold beforehand.
