Chasing Waterfalls

Delaware Water Gap surprised us with waterfall after waterfall hidden throughout the park. Despite the rain, we spent the day exploring its rivers and wooded valleys, rewarding us with this beautiful scene.

Last night, Clyde’s grandchildren took him and Niki out to dinner for an early celebration of his 84th birthday, which is September 6! This was Clyde’s first adventure out to eat since his fall, making the evening especially meaningful.

For those who may not have heard, Clyde fell on July 28 and broke his hip and three ribs. On July 29, he underwent a successful partial hip replacement. He moved to a rehabilitation center on August 1 to begin his recovery and returned home on August 15.

We’re happy to report that Clyde is doing very well with his rehabilitation! He continues to get stronger and hopes to be back to his old self by the end of the month.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out, kept Clyde in your thoughts and prayers, and wished him well. Your kindness and support mean so much to our family. ❤️

Just an hour and a half west of New York City, the Delaware Water Gap waterway runs between Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Niki and I visited in the springtime and experienced the joy of the flowing rivers, streams, and creeks that meander through more than thirty-five miles of pristine wilderness.

Of course, everyone said we wouldn’t be able to photograph in the rain, but the May showers didn’t stop us from capturing these beautiful images. After all, that’s what umbrellas are for!

The Smoky Mountains are a biological wonderland. In the spring, the mountains pulsate with the lush green of new life. It reverberates through my body and leaves me with joy, reveling in the mystery of life. Every stream is filled with water, creating endless photographic opportunities.

I always look for landscapes untouched by man. If there is order or a lack of variety of plants, chances are a human has been there. If an ecosystem is filled with chaos or contains many different plants, humans have most likely not disturbed the environment.

The Great Smoky Mountains contain a fairyland of textures, and that is heaven for a large-format photographer.

The Land We Share - Maine

Where the National Parks Journey Began

I had heard stories about the beauty of Acadia National Park and was excited to finally photograph it. While exploring the island’s rugged coastline, I followed a narrow trail to a cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and carefully positioned my 11×14 camera at the edge to capture the view.

After this photograph was published, I was invited to return and create additional images for a project celebrating the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. That experience marked the beginning of my journey to photograph National Parks across America.

The magnificent weather patterns in Florida create opportunities to witness impressive thunderheads rising to the sky and exploding into thunder and lightning. This image, taken at Everglades National Park in Florida Bay, contains a small sand-spit of an island that shows the effects of the storms that rage through Florida.

Those storms create changes in this tiny area of land during every season. I enjoy coming back to it as often as I can to see how nature has reshaped the island and to photograph the changes.

Gator Holes -
The American alligator is an architect and the apex species of the Everglades wetlands. Alligators excavate deep holes in the muck for their comfort. In the dry season, these excavated areas, called gator holes, hold the last remaining waters until the spring rains return.

These depressions create aquatic habitats that allow fish, turtles, frogs, and invertebrates to survive the drought-like conditions of the dry season. Some of these small animals become the alligator’s prey, yet many survive to repopulate the wetlands when the rains return.

I was told that the Hillsborough River, near Tampa, has rapids. Florida has no mountains, so I couldn’t imagine rapids in Florida. I was very curious about how they would look. As I hiked toward the rapids, the sound of the water rushing over the rocks took my mind back to the rivers of California, which I had photographed when I was young.

However, the Hillsborough River is not like any river in California. It had been a dry spring, so the rocks stood out of the river, creating wonderful photographic opportunities. I chose a long exposure for this photograph so that the movement of the water would ‘soften’ and contrast with the hard forms of the rocks.
