Clyde Butcher Photography Internationally renowned black and white photographer, humanitarian, and environmentalist.

For more than 50 years, Clyde Butcher has been creating exquisite black and white photographs of the untouched natural landscapes of North America. Internationally renowned, his stunning photography transports the viewer into the primordial beauty of expansive horizons, endless vistas, and seldom seen splendor of the wilderness. His powerful images explore not only his own personal bond with the environment, but beckon us to our own personal communion with the natural world. Although Butcher will always be identified with the Everglades, he is deeply committed to recording precious landscapes throughout the world. The beauty and importance of Butcher’s photography quickly earned him widespread recognition resulting in museum exhibits in the United States, an exhibit at the National Gallery of Art in Prague celebrating the new millennium, and a request by the United Nations to photograph the mountains of Cuba to celebrate The Year of the Mountains.

The fight to save the Everglades began at the Loxahatchee Wildlife Refuge, and so when I went there to photograph I was looking for an image that I felt represented my feelings of what the Everglades looks like. The clouds, a distant tree hammock, water, grass, and water lilies, all represented my feelings for the Everglades.

From the redwood forests of California to the Everglades of Florida, Clyde Butcher’s America the Beautiful celebrates the wild places that make this country so special.

Through his black-and-white photographs, Clyde captures landscapes set aside for all of us to enjoy and appreciate, while reminding us of the importance of protecting them for generations to come.

This exhibit is on display at the Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens now through December 6, 2026.

While working on the PBS documentary about the Apalachicola River with Elam Stoltzfus and the Live Oak Production Group, I took a break to explore some offshore islands, including St. Vincent Island, a National Wildlife Refuge.

This undeveloped island is a wonder to visit. Although I only had a few days to photograph, I could have stayed much longer. I found this beautiful piece of driftwood. With all of its textures, I couldn’t resist photographing the beauty of it.

When the Wilderness Society asked me to photograph the Grand Staircase-Escalante region of Utah to help save the land from oil exploration, I readily agreed. I had a great time exploring and photographing the area.

The rugged, wind-blown rocks and ever-changing shadows that formed across the boulders made for endless photographic opportunities. The Wilderness Society chose my photographs to help influence President Clinton to use his authority under the Antiquities Act of 1906 to designate Escalante as the largest of all the United States National Monuments.

I am grateful my images helped preserve this magnificent place in our country.

For an enchanting evening under the stars, our Swamp Cottage, Clyde and Niki Butcher's former home, is the perfect escape. Nestled in the heart of Big Cypress National Preserve in the western Everglades, this designated Dark Sky Place is protected from the glow of city lights.

Spend the evening gazing at the Milky Way through towering cypress trees, or take a short drive to a nearby open prairie where an endless canopy of stars stretches from horizon to horizon.

Although alligators are often depicted as ruthless and violent, they also have a soft side, as Niki and I have seen over the years while surrounded by more than a million acres of Everglades wilderness.

We’ve witnessed the courtship of the resident alligators and the protectiveness of the female as she watches after her hatchlings for their first two years. She discourages gators other than her mate from entering the pond, driving off intruders with a territorial bellow and physical displays while welcoming her mate with soft rumbles.

Like the majority of wild animals, these ancient reptiles can be dangerous and should be respected. When it comes to wildlife, never take your safety for granted when you’re out in the wild.

The sky had become overcast making the weather perfect for photographing the interior of the area. Niki and I were wandering around and came across this wonderful piece of driftwood sitting in a soft spongy growth of lichen.

The contrast between the rough and the soft was exciting to me, so I took the picture. It wasn’t until I got home and developed the film that I realized I had photographed a dragon!
