We celebrate the rich diversity of crafts, trades, and practices of our region. The foundation preserves and shares the nation's largest collection of historic log cabins known as Hart Square Village, an open-air museum of 103 original structures constructed between 1760 to 1880. All of these structures tell the larger story of American history and the specific story of North Carolina's regional heritage.

For the 41st time, Hart Square Village comes alive with hundreds of historians, demonstrators, artisans and craftspeople, on October 24th.

Experience the magic of Autumn at Hart Square Village, a beautiful nature preserve that hosts the largest collection of historic log cabins in the United States. Step back in time, with each cabin telling a story, and each demonstrator keeping old Appalachia alive.

The village is located in Vale, NC and is conveniently located about an hour from both Charlotte and Asheville, only 15 minutes from Hickory, North Carolina.

Enjoy the essence of an Appalachian Autumn — fruit pressing, beautiful foliage, and a setting like no other. Step back in time to the early 1800’s as you interact with over 300 traditional artisans and historic demonstrators at the Fall Heritage Festival. Witness traditional crafts ranging from broom making, black smithing, and gristmilling, all the while visiting over one hundred local, historical cabins.

And all of this is nestled in Vale, North Carolina, only about an hour drive from Asheville and Charlotte. This is truly an event you do not want to miss!

The early tinsmith required only a few tools: mallets, shears, and molds. Over time, tinsmiths acquired simple machinery like rollers and foot-operated sheers. The tin plate from which most of their wares were crafted was called "poor man's silver." For the frontiersmen, this suited their needs for pots, pans, canisters, candlesticks, teapots, and more. The basic tools on display in the Tinsmith Shop at Hart Square Village were capable of making all the tinwares needed by the area's inhabitants.
