Did you know that October 28th is recognized by UNESCO as International Creole Day to highlight global Creole-speaking populations and the Kwéyòl/Kreyòl language ?

Here in Louisiana, the Creole language, also known as "Kouri-Vini," is making a comeback among people of all ages and backgrounds. There's lots of Louisiana Creole language content on social media and classes are offered in person and online.

Before European colonization, the Native Americans knew the area around today's Laura Plantation as "Tabiscania," meaning "long river view." On this , we remember that many of our Louisiana place names are Indigenous, and our Louisiana French and Creole heritage languages are filled with Indigenous words like *plaquemine* (plak-meen) for persimmon.

Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities

The Laura Center for Creole Heritage, in partnership with the Laura Plantation Company, announces the Unending Arc of Freedom Tour.

Funded by an America 250 mini grant from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities (LEH), the tour will follow the trajectory of Guillaume Duparc, his descendants, and those they enslaved to explore the history of “liberty” from the War for Independence to the Civil War.

Guillaume Duparc was a French naval veteran of the American Revolution who served at the battles of Savannah, Pensacola, and Yorktown. He founded L’Habitation Duparc, today’s Laura Plantation in 1805.

The Unending Arc of Freedom tour will be offered at 2:00 PM every Friday in October. Reservations can be made at www.lauraplantation.com.

Funding for the 2026 Parish America 250 Mini Grant has been provided by the State of Louisiana and administered by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities in partnership with the Louisiana Office of the Lieutenant Governor and the America 250 Louisiana State Commission.
