This video (link in comments) demonstrates our vision of the Garyville Northern Railroad! With the support of our members, donors, and volunteers, we plan to make this vision a reality. Twenty-eight years ago, LASTA was founded to educate people about Louisiana's rich railroading history. With this new chapter in Garyville, our mission has never been stronger!

Over the past several months, much of our focus has been dedicated to relocating our equipment from the south yard. While this work temporarily delayed the start of the locomotive's rebuild, we're pleased to share some updated information.

With our move out of the South Yard complete, we can begin turning our attention back to SP 745. Over the next several weeks, we will begin initial preparatory work for the 1472 rebuild and the move to Garyville. Some of the work to be performed includes the brake system service and evaluation, a thorough running gear inspection, surface rust preventive maintenance, and other items preparatory to the scheduled move.

These are just the initial steps as we move forward with a rebuild that meets today's FRA standards and our grant funding obligations. We thank our members, volunteers and followers for your continued support. Each phase—relocation, preparation, and restoration—brings us closer to seeing SP 745 operate once again.

Over the past few weeks, crews have been working to clear property along the planned route of our new railroad, which will follow sections of the original Garyville Northern Railroad. With final approvals nearly in place, we’re aiming to begin rail construction early next year.

The new tracks will run from the museum depot and extend for one mile north, bringing history back to life while laying the foundation for future passenger operations. Our track plan is designed for future growth while allowing us to provide regularly scheduled train rides and special events such as Train Rides with Santa.
