Liberty Hall Museum at Kean University is the home of New Jersey's first governor, William Livingston and has been a silent witness to more than 250 years of history! Welcome to Liberty Hall Museum at Kean University, home of New Jersey’s first elected governor and signer of the Constitution, William Livingston. Built in 1772, on the eve of the American Revolution, Liberty Hall has been a silent witness to more than 200 years of American history. Over the last two centuries, the originally designed 14-room Georgian Style home has grown into a 50-room Victorian-style mansion. The site houses extensive collections of antique furniture, ceramics, textiles, toys and tools owned by seven generations of Livingston and Kean families. Congressmen and Senators, business entrepreneurs, and pioneering women with vision and strength. The stories of their lives, passed down from generation to generation, tell how this family met the challenges of a changing nation. Visit Liberty Hall Museum and discover the living past.

Just in time for National Boss' Day, meet our Executive Director, Rachael! Did you know that 2026 marks her 18th year at Liberty Hall?! That’s 18 years of history, events, and probably (most definitely) a few too many meetings! 😂 Rachael was hired as a part time museum educator before becoming the Curator of Collections, and then ultimately the executive director.

When she’s not busy running the museum, you might find her building with LEGOs, doing a puzzle, or enjoying a well-deserved lazy day with a book or catching up on some TV. 🧩 😮‍💨 📺

If Rachael could travel back in time, she’d head straight to the late 1800s for the fashion and social dynamics… although she’s not so sure about the corsets! She’s also convinced she’d make an excellent butler or ladies’ maid.

With degrees in History and Political Science, a master’s in American History, an MBA, and a certificate in Historic Preservation, it’s safe to say Rachael is a glutton for self inflicted punishment. 📚🤣

Originally from Freehold, NJ, (BRRUUUUCE) she’s also a proud boy mom to Henry and Teddy and a devoted fan of Jersey Freeze’s Ice Cream and Vic’s Pizzeria’s pizza, in Bradley Beach. 🍕🍦 Both are core childhood memories and just so delicious!

🎂 Happy Birthday, May Kean Raynolds! 🎉
Today, May (Kean) Raynolds would have celebrated her 99th birthday! To honor her special day, we’re excited to introduce our newest May Kean Raynolds Fellow, Ray Zhang!
May was one of the last children to grow up at Liberty Hall and was the first woman in her family to attend college. Having grown up surrounded by the history of the house, May developed an appreciation for Liberty Hall’s rich past. Her connection to the house and its history is one of the reasons this fellowship was named in her honor.
A recent graduate of Brown University, Ray is working with Liberty Hall Museum to update and develop new website content and tour materials highlighting the enslaved individuals who lived and labored on the property. This important work helps us continue to share their stories and bring greater visibility to the lives and experiences of those whose histories are an essential part of Liberty Hall’s story.
The May Kean Raynolds Fellowship is designed to provide a mentored professional development opportunity for graduate students seeking careers in the museum field, helping them gain valuable experience as they prepare for their future careers.
We’ve loved having Ray as part of the Liberty Hall team and can’t wait to see what he accomplishes during his fellowship!

Huzzah! What a night to remember! 🎉

Last night, Liberty Hall Museum hosted its annual fundraising event, celebrating the 250th anniversary of Governor William Livingston’s inauguration as New Jersey’s first elected governor with a spectacular Inauguration Ball in his honor!

A heartfelt thank-you to everyone who joined us for this special evening. We would also like to shine a spotlight on our wonderful donors and sponsors, whose generosity and support helped make this event such a success!

The funds raised will help us continue preserving Liberty Hall Museum and sharing more than 250 years of history with hundreds of visitors of all ages for years to come.

Thank you for being part of our story and helping keep history alive!

Meet Stacey!😊
Stacey has been part of the Liberty Hall Museum team since October 2025, joining us as a Museum Educator after retiring from a career as an elementary school teacher. We’re so glad her next chapter brought her to Liberty Hall!😄

Stacey grew up in Norwood, NJ, near the border of Rockland County, NY. She attended Harvard University (yes, you read that correctly!, )where she earned degrees in history and law. 🪶⚖️
Outside of Liberty Hall, Stacey enjoys biking, hiking, visiting museums, listening to musical theater albums (especially Sondheim!), and reading about American history. It’s no surprise that her favorite museum is the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History—she proudly considers herself a history nerd!🚵‍♀️🥾🎭📖

Here are a few fun facts about Stacey: she had a Jack Russell mix named Roxie for 17 years, she’s a big Star Trek fan, and she traveled to New Zealand when her younger son was studying there.🐶🖖🛫🇳🇿
Her perfect day off would involve seeing a Broadway show followed by dinner in New York City. In reality, though, her days off are usually filled with laundry and cleaning the house! The next Broadway show on her list is Schmigadoon.🎭🗽🧺🧹

If Stacey could travel through time, she would head back to 1787—but only if she could serve at the Constitutional Convention. She would love the opportunity to participate in the formation of our country’s government! 🇺🇸 🗳
And when it’s time for an ice cream treat, you can find Stacey at Carvel with her husband, enjoying a chocolate soft-serve.😋🍦🍨

On this day, the United States Constitution was signed in Philadelphia.

The Constitution remains the world’s oldest written national constitution still in use. It established the framework of the federal government and serves as the supreme law of the United States.

But did you know that Liberty Hall’s own William Livingston was one of New Jersey’s five signers? 🇺🇸📜

New Jersey was represented at the Constitutional Convention by:

✍️ William Paterson
✍️ David Brearley
✍️ Jonathan Dayton
✍️ William C. Houston

And yes—you read that correctly! Three of New Jersey’s five signers were named William.

Livingston wasn’t just a signer of the Constitution—he was also New Jersey’s first elected governor, and his home, Liberty Hall, was already a place where the events shaping our new nation were unfolding.
