Meet one of the many volunteers who help make the Douglas County Museum possible!

Board Trustee Hannah Myers recently spent time archiving artifacts that had previously been on display and helping clean and organize a back room with a vision for its future. While these tasks often happen behind the scenes, they play an important role in preserving our local history and creating space for future preservation projects.

Like many not non-profits, we rely on the dedication of volunteers to help care for our collections, maintain our spaces, and keep our mission moving forward. Every volunteer makes a difference, and we are incredibly grateful for the time, talents, and passion they share.

This day in history: Don't Give Up the Ship ⚓️

June 1st is known as Don't Give Up the Ship Day, a day that commemorates Captain James Lawrence's decision to remain on board the USS Chesapeake and refused to surrender the Ship to the British, where he remained on the ship until his death. The battle to take the ship began June 1, 1813, where after being mortally wounded, Captain Lawrence gave the famous orders "don't give up the ship", which gave the crew the energy and inspiration to fight to the end and became a rallying cry for the rest of the War of 1812.
