Tomorrow, June 18th, Mark Turdo, the Old Barracks Museum’s Assistant Director of Interpretation & Curation, will be part of part of the panel “Living History in Practice: Special Considerations for Historical Reenactments” at the New Jersey History and Historic Preservation Conference in Morristown, New Jersey.

Representatives from the Old Barracks Museum, Middlesex County, Washington Crossing State Park, Howell Living History Farm, and the Princeton Battlefield Society will discuss best practices and shared challenges related to educating and training staff and volunteers, making historically accurate costumes, handling and serving food in historic kitchens, and the safe and responsible handling of historic weaponry. Panelists will highlight how their institutions balance authenticity with modern safety standards, regulatory requirements, and visitor expectations.

This session will offer practical insights for museum professionals, site managers, and educators who plan or support living history programs, providing attendees with transferable strategies to strengthen reenactment programs across a wide range of historic settings.

Join us this Saturday for Trenton Barracks Founders Day!

On June 13, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, the Old Barracks Museum will be hosting its first annual Trenton Barracks Founders Day. Guests can enjoy a bubble show, face painting, balloon animals, food trucks, and a musical performance by the Blawenburg Band (be sure to bring a chair!). The New Jersey State Museum and the 1719 William Trent House Museum will also be on-site, providing information and hosting activities throughout the day. Submissions from the Old Barracks Youth Art Contest will be displayed. This family-friendly event promises to be a day filled with fun and entertainment for the entire community! Trenton Barracks Founders Day will be free thanks to our sponsor, Hunter Research.

⁠In 1902, members of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Colonial Dames organized the Old Barracks Association and purchased the building. The site became a museum in 1903 and continues to welcome guests from across the globe. Trenton Barracks Founders Day will celebrate the unique history of one of the nation’s last freestanding colonial barracks while honoring the women who fought to preserve the site.⁠

Please note Barracks St. will be closed from West State to Lafayette for this event.

The Old Barracks Museum invites the community to participate in a unique fundraising campaign which culminates in the creation of a temporary recreation of the arch that George Washington walked under on his inaugural march through Trenton. The Trent House will host an exhibit and a game based on the theme “Trenton Eyewitness to Revolution."

The New Jersey State Museum will have informational materials for the museum's programs and exhibits celebrating New Jersey's and the United States’ 250th anniversary. They will also have an interactive button-making craft inspired by their brand-new exhibition, “Spirit of ‘76: The Bicentennial.”
