The Old Barracks Museum will be closed on October 21st for staff training. On October 23rd, we will open at noon for All Barracks Eve festivities. Join us that evening at 6 pm for spooky stories and fun!

Today is International Archaeology Day. Archaeology helped to make the barracks look like how it is today. Throughout the second restoration of the barracks [1980s-1990s], the first professional archeological excavations were conducted throughout the site. The parade ground was examined, and indications of a central stairway and porches were discovered along the exterior of the building, believed to be from the original 1758 construction. These features informed how the barracks was restored during the second restoration, changing the building’s white second-story porch to the red first- and second-floor porches and stairs. This Friday, October 16th, David Niescior, our Senior Historian, will be sharing his talk on the Old Barracks Associations origins, “‘Future Generations Will Turn These Leaves With Commendable Pride’: Appeals to Legacy for the Preservation of the Old Barracks in Trenton New Jersey, 1899-1920.” David developed this talk from exhibit research he did for our new Preservation Gallery exhibit which we opened in July.

“George Washington’s Dilemma” tackles the story of the French volunteers who helped win American independence. Volunteers were commissioned as officers in the Continental Army, and some had become great assets to General Washington, while others were frauds who came to America to make money.

Arthur Lefkowitz is an independent researcher specializing in the American Revolution. Arthur has a laudable reputation for tackling offbeat but interesting aspects of Our War for Independence that present a research challenge. He has published nine books to date on unique subjects including Colonel Arron Burr’s impressive Revolutionary War service, the American Turtle Submarine, and George Washington’s brilliant defense of New Jersey’s Watchung Mountains. Arthur’s education includes a BA from New York University and an MBA from Long Island University. He lives in New Jersey, which is accurately depicted as the Crossroads of the American Revolution.
