This remarkable unit was the first official black regiment to fight in America during the Revolutionary War, composed of free and formerly enslaved African American and Indigenous soldiers who played a crucial role in key battles, including the Battle of Rhode Island.

These soldiers fought for their nation's freedom—and their own.

In our interactive Meet a Revolutionary! experience, Steve Thomas portrays Peter Williams of Woodbridge, bringing one of Middlesex County's Revolutionary-era residents to life through stories and demonstrations of everyday 18th-century skills.

Visit Caught in the Crossfire: Divided Loyalties in Middlesex County at the Cornelius Low House Museum and experience history through the eyes of the people who lived it.
