Cold and flu season approaches. Wash your hands often. While you're scrubbing be grateful you don't have to go to the well, pump the water, carry it in, pour it in the basin, and wash. Which is what the students at the Nutwell School had to do.

The weather has changed! Brew up some hot chocolate, but only if you have the appropriate serving pot. Ida Mae Deale Welch served chocolate to her family at Christmas time using this beauty!

For those of us who are interested in the history of to***co farming, this is displayed at the Anne Arundel County Fair. The to***co was grown at Zangs Farm in Harwood in 2026. It is variety #609, which was a very popular variety. To the side you see the sticks that held the to***co, which was then hung on the rafters to dry.
Once cured, the to***co was layered in the box, or stanchion, in bundles sorted by the farmer. This stanchion was made circa 1965 out of pine and oak slats. Loose-leaf to***co was sold in the auction warehouses in Hughesville, Waldorf, and Upper Marlboro.

Who remembers going to the auction? What was it like?

We recently received a nice donation of farming photos from Virginia Dove . She has identified this as herself plowing. She wrote, "the work was hard, but there was a rhythm. We had a big garden, fruit trees, strawberries, blackberries growing wild, and two hogs to eat every year. We ate well, worked when we needed to, sat down when we had to but didn't have a boss telling me when to start work and when I could quit."

It's back to school time! Miss Chaney, teacher at the Nutwell School, would tell you to sit up straight and work hard!
You can visit the school from 1-4 at the Historic Village at Herrington Marina, Sunday August 23rd. Bring your kids.
