NOW OPEN: Check out our newest exhibit, Cigar City Cinema: Tampa Goes to the Movies! You'll explore the evolution of Tampa's moviegoing experience - from the first short film exhibitions at the Tampa Bay Hotel Casino to the innovations in sound, camera techniques, and social commentary that defined the inaugural decade of film screenings at Tampa Theatre.

We have several objects on loan from Tampa Theatre that reveal how theater employees and audience members redefined the movie palace to make it a beloved community institution and an indispensable part of local life.

Beginning with the pioneering work of the American Mutoscope and Biograph Company and continuing through the epic films of D.W. Griffith, this program showcases the role played by music scores and performing artists in America’s emerging film industry.

🪵 🏯 Crafted with distinct Japanese design influences, this rustic piece features interwoven briar branches that form its legs, arms, and backrest. The artifact exhibits an asymmetrical, uneven exterior marked by bumpy nodules and coarsely textured roots, all coated in a dark stain. Historically, it is one of a matching set originally documented in the solarium of the historic Tampa Bay Hotel.

Movie buffs, this one is for you! 🎞️🎥

Our newest exhibit, Cigar City Cinema: Tampa Goes to the Movies, 1897-1936, opens in just 9 days! Starting October 3, you can immerse yourself in the history of Tampa's first playhouse — the Tampa Bay Hotel Casino — and Tampa Theatre's history through video, artifacts, and more.

On October 11, all are welcome to explore the newly restored Duncan Auditorium at Tampa Theatre during an open house from 1-5 PM. Volunteers will be stationed throughout the building to answer questions. Theatre staff will leadi mini-tours starting from the lobby, and a new Digital Guide — accessible on patrons’ own phones and tablets — will offer historic photos and information about the landmark building’s first 100 years.
