Signature welcomes Will Ortman to the gallery and online. Will's exquisite glasswork is born of an appreciation for diverse cultural influences and organic textures and patterns...

"I graduated from the Columbus College of Art and Design in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in fine art with a focus in glass blowing. My objective as an artist is to create aesthetic forms using incredibly rich colors and textures. There are many reasons why I work with glass, but what really hooked me was the opportunity glass provides to play with color.

I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to study with other glass artists and have benefited from exploring some of the infinite variations that working with glass offers. Currently I am exploring the incalmo technique and have been incorporating cane working and complex Murine designs. Using traditional Italian techniques, I draw inspiration from Asian cultural art, and this has allowed me to find a style of my own.

Initially, I started out making simple vessels. But the challenge of rendering more complex structures in glass soon caught my imagination. I am making works of art that have organic influences and now have multiple forms ranging from familiar vases with exotic patterns to nature inspired shells.

Though I make many pieces, each one is a unique creation requiring intense concentration and often great skill to produce. I think of these pieces as part of an overall progression, each having their own potential, but also being a step towards creating improved versions of them. Glass making is what I love to do, and I couldn’t see myself doing anything else." - Will Ortman

HEALING PALMS

"Around three decades ago central and north Florida was gripped by a seasonal dry spell. On occasion, the first quarter of the year in the Sunshine State is exceedingly dry. High pressure zones keep wet weather pushed well to the north. During the late 1990’s we had several years of drought. Without controlled burns many areas were nothing more than a tinderbox waiting for a spark to get them going.

The fires started with a fury. For weeks a thick blanket of smoke lay across the region. Many days saw ash raining from the sky. It seemed Armageddon was upon us. With the help of our dedicated civil servants and a bit of help from Mother Nature the flames were eventually extinguished.

After the fire I drove south from Jacksonville down Interstate 95. The roadside were blackened as far as one could see to the East and West. The landscape was bleak in all directions.

Within a few short weeks things began to change. On a subsequent trip down 95 the first thing I noticed was that at the top of the blackened trunks of our native Cabbage Palm, Sabal palmetto, straps of green started appearing. Soon the entire fans emerged. The Saw Palmetto, Sereno repens, was soon to follow. Within a month the blackened landscape was lush. The palmettos sent out sprays of blossoms. No doubt the bees were having a feast.

Watching this process inspired me to develop an image that payed homage to the regenerative power of nature. During the next several years I made paintings in a series called Healing Palms." - Jim Draper

Signature welcomes Nick Everett to the gallery and our website! signatureartgallery.com/artist/nicholas-everett

Everett is a contemporary ceramic artist creating beautiful abstract installations using traditional pottery forms. His work is influenced from his travels around the world as an Anthropologist. Drawing from expressionist painting as much as Japanese calligraphy Nick seeks to capture raw motion and feeling in his pieces. This energy is palpable when you see the large-scale installation. Colorful and energetic or communicating in monochrome with raw brush strokes Nick's work resonates strongly with a sophisticated eloquence.

Come in and experience these beautiful pieces in person!
