🌊 The S.S. Tahoe: Then & Now ⚓️
August 29, 1940 — the S.S. Tahoe was sunk in Lake Tahoe, beginning her life as one of the lake’s most fascinating underwater time capsules.

This video, filmed more than 20 years ago, gives us a glimpse of the Tahoe resting deep beneath the surface. But what does she look like today, more than 80 years later?

Come to the Gatekeeper’s Museum to find out! Our Under Lake Tahoe exhibit features recent underwater footage of the Tahoe filmed by Mission Robotics—giving us a remarkable look at the vessel as she appears today, nearly 400 feet beneath the lake’s surface.

Last weekend’s great Concours d’Elegance at Lake Tahoe got us thinking about the incredible history of boating on the lake. 🚤
Long before today’s classic boats were turning heads, Tahoe was the scene of some pretty spectacular regattas and powerboat races. Racers gathered on these crystal-clear waters to compete at high speed—creating a colorful chapter in Tahoe’s boating history.

We dug into the archives and found some amazing footage of those races, capturing the boats, the competition, and the excitement of another era on the lake.

From wooden boats and hand-tied flies to generations of anglers chasing the next big catch, fishing has always been woven into Lake Tahoe’s story.
Long before Tahoe became a world-famous destination, its clear, cold waters sustained Indigenous communities and later drew pioneers, guides, and sportsmen from across the West. Native Lahontan cutthroat trout once thrived here, and over the decades the lake’s fisheries evolved alongside changing conservation efforts and a growing appreciation for protecting this remarkable ecosystem.

These photos offer a glimpse into a different era—when mornings began before sunrise, stories were swapped at the dock, and a day on the water was about far more than the fish.

Today, every cast connects us to that rich history and reminds us why preserving Lake Tahoe matters for generations to come.
