“Pig in a blanket,” designed by Forrest (age 10) is a Kids Design Glass classic. “This little Pigy is in his blanket because he doesn’t want to get the swine flu,” Forrest explained. Smart thinking, little Pigy!

This is our faces when we hear there are 14 new Kids Design Glass pieces on display in the Grand Hall 🤯

That’s right, you can come hang out with a whole slew of familiar faces and new friends created over the past 16 years! Join us in person to get a closer look, or just enjoy getting to know a few through our feed for the next few days.

First up, we have “Boogie-pillar,” whose designer Sam (age 10) says “It’s a caterpillar that looks different and doesn’t brush it’s teeth.”

We can’t believe it’s already that time—NCN Collective is in the Hot Shop this week! This superstar lineup featuring Preston Singletary, Martin Janecký, Raven Skyriver, Kelly O’Dell, Charles Parriott, and Joe David, are taking over the Hot Shop for TWO WEEKS starting this Wednesday, June 10!

NCN stands for Nuu-chah-nulth, the tribe that Joe David comes from. With their lives woven together, some over four decades, they collaborate in bringing life to contemporary Native sculpture using innovative glass techniques. Concepts and designs of the Tlingit and Nuu-chah-nulth tribes resonate through their unique glass sculptures.

During this two-week residency, the artists will work together in the Hot Shop to develop a new body of work that will draw on their artistic voices. The works created during the residency will be the basis for a future joint exhibition that showcases the collaboration, as well as the individual works from the artists to demonstrate the convergence of their ideas.

The members of the NCN Collective have traversed through each other’s lives beginning in the late seventies, between the Pacific Northwest and the Czech Republic, through Pilchuck Glass School and various glass teams and studios, collaborating, traveling the world, teaching, demonstrating and developing each of their unique individual approaches.

Cloudy weather got you down? Take a look at this Art of the Week, Lino Tagliapietra’s “Acque Basse”, which will be joining us in the newly renovated Lino Tagliapietra Legacy Gallery in the fall!

The translucent aquamarine base and vibrant red forms in “Acque Basse” are reminiscent of a tranquil float on a lake in the peak summertime sun. Sunnier days are right around the corner. Where are you seeing yourself float this summer?

Join us on Saturday, June 13, from 5–6pm for a special storytelling event and Q&A with Preston Singletary and Gene Tagaban focusing on the themes of Singletary’s landmark exhibition “Preston Singletary: Raven and the Box of Daylight”. Tagaban, a Tlingit storyteller, will bring Raven to life through stories, dances, and songs.

Gene Tagaban is an influential storyteller, trainer, speaker, mentor, and performer. Tagaban is of the Takdeintaan clan, the Raven, Freshwater Sockeye clan from Hoonah, AK. He is the Child of the Wooshkeetaan clan, the Eagle, Shark clan from Juneau, AK. He is Cherokee, Tlingit and Filipino. He has been a featured teller at the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, TN, Kansas City Storytelling Festival, the Bay Area Storytelling Festival in Berkley, St. Louis Storytelling Festival and the Singapore International Storytelling Festival.

This event is included with regular Museum admission and no additional admission ticket is required.

We’re proud to receive funding from the Bob Woodruff Foundation for our work in our Hot Shop Heroes Program. Hot Shop Heroes glassblowing courses assist active-duty and retired service men and women in their successful transition to civilian life. The program has shown that the attention and teamwork needed to blow glass can be therapeutic, especially for individuals with traumas and injuries that have occurred during military service. The Bob Woodruff Foundation and Museum of Glass are committed to ensuring our nation’s veterans, service members, and their families have access to the highest level of support and resources they’ve earned.
