Learn how the people, boats, and industries that built the heart of Tacoma have shaped our future and changed the way we view the treasures of Puget Sound. Located on the waterfront, in a century-old wheat
warehouse known as the Balfour Dock building, Foss Waterway Seaport is where history actually took place! It is one of two remaining wooden
warehouses originally built to accommodate cargo arriving by rail and departing by square-rigged ships that frequented the port during the early
years of Tacoma's history. Foss Waterway Seaport is Puget Sound's maritime heritage, education and event center, where families, students and entire communities come to discover, explore, work and play. ACTIVITIES

Educator Night at the Museum is coming to the Foss Waterway Seaport on October 29 from 6-8PM, presented by the Tacoma Museum District. Spots are limited, and registration is required for this FREE event.

Local educators, come relax, mingle, and learn about resources available at nonprofits around the Puget Sound. You'll enjoy light bites and refreshments, a private viewing of our exhibits (including a sneak peek at our new Willits Canoes exhibit), and a chance to win fabulous prizes in our giveaway.

Today, we honor the enduring presence, history, and cultures of Indigenous peoples in the Puget Sound region and beyond.

The Seaport stands on the traditional homelands of the spuyaləpabš (Puyallup) people, and we are grateful for their stewardship of these waters since time immemorial.

Our Mother of Waters mural by River Reishi honors the mountain that births the waters of the Puyallup watershed, and was inspired by the Indigenous nations who have lived around her for countless generations. We invite you to learn, reflect, and take part in the work of preserving and respecting these stories.

This building has survived more than you'd think. 🔥⚓

The Foss Waterway Seaport museum sits in the last remaining section of what was once the longest wheat warehouse in the world. Construction began in 1900, and the complex stretched half a mile.

Brick firewalls divided it into sections. Over the years, fires took every section but one, and the firewall protecting it is the reason it's still standing. 🧱

In the early 2000s, that brick wall was replaced with the glass wall that welcomes you in today. 🪟

The Tacoma Museum District presents: Educator Night at the Museum! ✏️⚓️

We're excited to announce that Foss Waterway Seaport will be hosting Educator Night on October 29th, 2026 from 6-8PM. If you are a local educator interested in relaxing and mingling, while learning more about the resources available at nonprofits in the Puget Sound area, this event is for you!

Registration is required for this FREE event to ensure your space is saved! Join us to enjoy light bites and refreshments, private viewing of our exhibits (including a preview of a new exhibit about Willits Canoes), and entry in a giveaway to win fabulous prizes.
