In 2009, to coincide with the impending 50th anniversary of Sun City, the Sun Cities Area Historical Society decided that it was time to focus on sharing its extensive collections and artifacts with a larger community. It renamed its headquarters the Del Webb Sun Cities Museum, and had a grand opening of the new museum on January 1, 2010. The Museum preserves and presents records and artifacts through carefully designed exhibits that chronicle the more than 50-year history of Sun City and the 25-year history of its sister city, Sun City West.

The Webb Spinner was the company news magazine of the Del E. Webb Construction Company for several decades. For several years each issue featured a caricature drawing and story about various employees, including the top management. Del Webb himself, in the May, 1951 issue, was the featured story. The idea of the Sun Cities was still nine years into the future, but baseball and ownership of the NY Yankees was very much the current hot topic, along with the continued post war growth of the company. Pictured is the caricature story of Del Webb himself, who went from a baseball minded young man to eventually the man Time magazine would feature as an August, 1962 cover story on the creation of a new way of retirement.

Thank you to El Dorado of Sun City for recently hosting a history talk presented by the Del Webb Sun Cities Museum. Past President Bret McKeand presented a talk on "Sun City: A Community that Changed a Nation." The program continued after Bret's presentation thanks to a lively question-and-answer session and attendees sharing their own memories of their lives and experiences in Sun City.

In 1971 strong sales in Sun City led Del Webb to begin exploring options to continue the success. Expansion opportunities for Sun City were limited by the Agua Fria river to the west. Further out west, just past the river, the Circle One Livestock and Feed Lot presented an option. Webb took the opportunity to secure the 1700 acres of land that made up the Lizard Acres nicknamed property. This purchase was the first of several that would secure the future Sun City West. Pictured is the Lizard Acres milling operations which sat roughly at the far eastern end of today’s Grandview Golf Course. Today, the Lizard Acre’s story remains as a railroad designation point just west of the intersection of Grand Avenue and Bell Rd, and as the name of the pub at the RH Johnson recreation center in Sun City West.

Got baseball fever? Is your favorite team World Series bound? Come visit the Del Webb Sun Cities Museum, our Webb Room shares Webb’s connection to baseball from his childhood dreams to his ownership of the the New York Yankees. Pictured is Del Webb with a young Joe DiMaggio in February, 1951. Webb was then in his sixth year of Yankee ownership. Webb’s connection to baseball played a key role in the growth of Spring training in Arizona. Did you know that before construction Del pursued a baseball playing career? In 1981, the idea of creating a community services center was raised by Sun City West’s Property Owners Residents Association (PORA). In 1984, the PORA Foundation became a chartered organization, later renamed the Sun City West Foundation. With the support of the Del Webb Development Company and support from the Del Webb Foundation, ground was broken on the first phase of what is today’s Sun City West Foundation’s Community Services Complex. Over the next several years, two more additional phases would be built, land and space for the Sun City West Posse would be added to complete the Sun City West Foundation building as we know it today. In 1994, Del Webb Corporation would donate more land on the NW corner of RH Johnson and Stardust Boulevards allowing the Sun City West Foundation to build space for what is today’s Helping Hands and the Sun City West Prides. From a humble groundbreaking (pictured) one of Sun City West’s most vital community assets grew.

Too rainy to golf? Pickleball courts too wet? Have you ever wondered what the Sundome looked like inside? Enjoy the rain with a visit to the Del Webb Sun Cities Museum. Our Sundome Room will give you a look at what it was like to be inside, and the best part is you can enjoy it in an original Sundome seat. A visit is the perfect way to enjoy a rainy day, almost as good as playing golf or pickleball. The museum is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday 12-3. We are at 10801 W Oakmont Dr., Sun City in the original model home. A short 15 minute drive down Grand from Sun City West and Sun City Grand.

Opened on January 1, 1960 for the grand opening of Sun City, the shopping center located on the Southwest corner of 107th Ave. at Grand Ave. was quickly expanded to more than double its size. The expansion was completed and opened in March, 1961. The center was a major selling point for prospective owners, featuring a Safeway grocery store, a variety store, barber and beauty shops, and a variety of other merchants. It also drew in shoppers from Youngtown and the rural communities to the west, including the brand new city of Surprise. Today, the Safeway is now the Amish Furniture store and the gas station on the corner has been replaced by Starbucks. The center remains a valuable resource for the community.

In March, 1961 as development of Sun City moved to a new set of models and the new Town Hall recreation center (now Fairway), quietly another milestone occurred. The first Community Center, today’s Oakmont Recreation Center was turned over to the Community Association. While the Recreation Centers of Sun City (RCSC) was not yet formed, this transfer was the first step in a series of future transfers that would create the RCSC recreation center structure of Sun City today. A nine member resident board was established to oversee the operation of the center.
