A woodcarver (Alberto from Costa Rica) was looking at my woodcarvings at The Finer Arts Gallery and wanted to know how I got the fur texture on the small Javelina carving that was on display. He was fascinated by the intricate detail and wanted specific information on tools used, which I will also share with you. I use two different methods, depending on the scale of the carving. For the very small, I use a rotary bit (speed-controlled by a foot pedal), and for larger pieces, I use "V"-chisels in various sizes, and in some cases, both.

Rustic tables can be made with Mesquite lumber that has a lot of imperfections. Stains, holes and knots, all contribute to the "rustic" motif. With this job, I made a second table to match the original, using Mesquite that I had harvested from a fallen tree in my yard.

Making display stands for artifacts can be fun, especially with free rein. The first stand provides just enough support to keep the model boat upright. The sailboat stand, however, tells a story: a coiled rope and a carefully detailed holding structure create the illusion of a boat in drydock. The result makes the boat feel more important, and the rope supplies a relatable sense of scale.

This is the first look at the commemorative flag box that I've been working on. The box is made with Honduras Mahogany and finished with lacquer. The window panel is acrylic. I'm not sure whether I'll hinge the top panel to the bottom or seal it with six brass screws. The other question I have is, will I build a separate box for the medals or attach it to the base as an extension? I'm waiting to hear from the customer. More photos when finished.
