Sugar Land Heritage Foundation

Sugar Land Heritage Foundation Preserving the rich and unique history of Sugar Land, TX, for future Generations to come. A Legendary Past, Prosperous Present, and a Phenomenal Future.

The catalyst in the formation of the SLHF was the closing of the Imperial Sugar refinery in 2003. The refinery, which had been in continual operation since the mid 1800s, housed a vast historical treasure trove of artifacts, documents, and photographs that traced the evolution of the site from its early days as a working plantation into its more modern era as a company town. Many organizations beg

an to work together at this time to ensure that the priceless artifacts and the history of the site were preserved. Led by Dennis Parmer, whom had the time was serving on City Council, The City of Sugar Land, the Imperial Sugar Company, and Cherokee Investments developed a partnership approach to the creation of a community-based heritage museum which would collect, preserve, and exhibit the collection on the refinery site. The Sugar Land Heritage Foundation was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) organization in March 2008. The first Board meeting was held in October 2008, and a Strategic Planning session took place in February 2009. The City of Sugar Land has provided the seed funding for the formation of the Sugar Land Heritage Foundation along with generous support from Kempner Fund, Cherokee Investments, Johnson Development, Imperial Sugar, the Fort Bend Museum Association, and community representatives.

We are building our Día de los Mu***os volunteer team and we would love to have you.

Sugar Land Heritage Foundation's Día de los Mu***os Celebration is one of the most vibrant events of the year and it takes an incredible group of people to make it happen. We need help with setup, activities, community outreach, and event day support. No experience necessary — just a willingness to show up and celebrate with us.

Before security cameras and digital check-ins, the Imperial Sugar refinery had its own way of keeping guards accountable. The Detex Guardsman Watchclock recorded the exact time and location every time a guard inserted a key at a checkpoint, creating an uninterrupted paper record of every round. Old school accountability. Come see it in person at Sugar Land Heritage Museum. Link in bio.

When something broke at the Imperial Sugar refinery, workers didn't wait on a parts order. They melted metal and handled it themselves. This portable cast iron smelting pot was used on site for blacksmithing, shaping, and small castings. Over a century old and sitting right here in Sugar Land. Come see it in person at Sugar Land Heritage Museum. Link in bio.

This year marks the 127th anniversary of Hispanic Heritage in Sugar Land — and we are honoring it in a way that has never been done before.

Starting October 12, Sugar Land Heritage Museum will present a Día de los Mu***os exhibit featuring altars created by local families to honor the ancestors who lived in and helped build Sugar Land. Each altar tells a personal story and together they tell the story of our community.

The exhibit runs October 12 through November 1, Monday through Sunday, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Free admission at 198 Kempner Street, Building B, 2nd Floor.

Come honor the past, celebrate the present, and connect with the community that makes Sugar Land so special.

Urgent paperwork at the Imperial Sugar Company did not get walked across the building. It got loaded into a cylinder and shot through a tube using compressed air. Pneumatic tube systems were the instant messaging of the late 1800s and early 1900s and this one was likely used right here in Sugar Land. Come see it in person.
