Opened in 2008, La Grua Center is a nonprofit cultural center in Stonington Borough offering concerts, art exhibitions, and speakers on a wide variety of topics in a welcoming, acoustically distinctive space.

We’re partnering with Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center and NESS along with a few of our Youth Art Workshop veteran artists to present a variety of fall-themed art activities for children and teens of all ages. Registration not needed. Drop in any time starting at 10am... we’ll be creating until noon.

Join us tomorrow, October 7th at 6pm for a special event: Rhetoric & Reason~Great American Speeches

Presented in partnership with Historic Stonington, Rhetoric and Reason pairs historically significant speeches by Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Jr. and more with musical selections performed by Adam Lomeo that amplify the emotional and historical impact of their words.

These speeches demonstrate the power of the spoken word as a means of protest and civil discourse, and highlight the significance of civic participation in matters of society, politics, ethics and legislation. This event will showcase the voices of women and people of color in juxtaposition to those who have typically held positions of power. Rhetoric and Reason provides an opportunity to explore oration as a form of activism, and the timelessness of certain sentiments that are echoed across decades, race, gender and ability. We encourage the public to think critically about how these speeches impacted our country.

Open to the public. Suggested donation $5.

In their first performance as a duo, Adam (guitar) and Marcus (bass) will feature a mix of Jazz standards, covers, and originals. Be sure not to miss this outstanding performance—our final outdoor concert of the series!

Music Matters: Rêverie ~ Flute & Harp Duo

Flutist Anna Urrey and harpist Kristi Shade present Rêverie, an enchanting program celebrating the luminous and dreamlike partnership of the flute and harp through works by Debussy, Fauré, Piazzolla, and more. Active as soloists, chamber musicians, and orchestral artists, both performers also appear on Broadway and share the stage with some of the world’s most celebrated artists. Together, they bring their exceptional artistry and musical storytelling to a special concert that is not to be missed.

Wow! From the start, planning Porchfest felt special: community partners jumped at adding music to the Art Walk and sharing the day; neighbors were instantly on board to loan their porches and driveways; musicians were eager to rearrange their schedules to join the line-up; and volunteers were beyond enthusiastic to support the event and spread joy.

And then the day arrived. People from within our community and beyond showed up and a wonderful time was had!

Stonington’s first Porchfest was magical, and it’s because of so many!! Thank you to all who made the day possible. It’s exactly what Wynne La Grua envisioned for the La Grua Center when she donated the building in her husband’s name and honor. She hoped the arts and culture center would bring people together because community matters.

Porchfest

Join us this Saturday, from 12 to 4 p.m. for Stonington’s inaugural Porchfest, a free celebration of live music, art, and community held in conjunction with the annual Stonington Art Walk.

Porches, lawns, courtyards, and other outdoor spaces throughout Stonington Borough will become intimate stages for local musicians. Wander from one performance to another at your own pace, explore the Art Walk, and enjoy an afternoon filled with a wide range of acoustic music.

Stonington Porchfest is presented through a community collaboration among La Grua Center, the Stonington Borough Merchants Association, the Stonington Village Improvement Association, Salt Marsh Opera, and the Stonington Cultural District Commission, funded in part by the Kitchings Family Foundation.

Exhibit Opening: Textures
 The Textures exhibition features iterative representations of texts by former Merrill House Fellows who contributed to the Textures Anthology—a book project conceived on the occasion of the James Merrill Centenary that foregrounds the visual aspects of a text. Writers were asked to photograph a version of their writing that might be hand-written, chicken-scrawled, or typeset possibly including marks of a personal nature on a medium of their choice, such as paper bags, ATM receipts, or screenshot off a digital device.

Conceived and developed by David Schulz and Joanna Scott.

Exhibit will run through the end of October. Visit James Merrill House for more details on this and other events happening during the Centenary Festival
