In 1948. the Stoneham Ladies Lodge #1983 of the Order of the Sons of Italy in America (OSIA) was established. The first initiation and installation of officers was held on September 12, 1948, in the Marconi Hall on Pine Street. It was the culmination of an entire summer of hard work spearheaded by Jennie Salera. It was Jennie, at the urging of Dr. Angelo Maietta who was the Chairman of the Mass. Grand Lodge OSIA's Commission of Education and Organization, who made the idea of a Ladies Lodge in Stoneham a reality. Their first meeting was held in Jennie's home under the guidance of Dr. Maietta and Mass. Grand Venerable Anthony Julian. Madeline Lupo was elected the Lodge's first Venerable (President) and Jennie was elected Ex Venerable. They started with 25 Charter members and were the 136rh Lodge established in Massachusetts.

In 1973, having grown to 86 members, they celebrated their 25th Anniversary with a banquet at Boston's famous Blinstrub's Village.

Many of the charitable projects they participated in over the years were raising funds for an orphanage in Casino, Italy, participated in fund drive for the Don Orione Building Fund, cooking suppers for Stoneham Red Cross Bloodmobile workers, baking cakes for veterans in state hospitals and cookies for our soldiers during the Vietnam War. They also gave a yearly scholarship to a graduating Stoneham Senior.

Please join us on Sunday, October 18th from 1-4pm at the Museum for Antiques Appraisal Day with Frank Kaminski of Kaminski Auctions. Kaminski's clients include Oprah Winfrey, Martha Stewart, The Waldorf Astoria, Mrs. Henry Ford II and of course, the Stoneham Historical Society & Museum. Mr. Kaminiski has never forgotten his "roots" and has always been a staunch supporter of the SHSM and trusted (and generous) advisor on items in our collection.

In the style of the popular TV series, Antiques Appraisal, his expert opinion will be provided for the value at auction for items presented. No appointment times assigned as all items are displayed and evaluated in as many groups as necessary to accommodate everyone. Admission is free to enjoy the entertaining and informative banter. However, for those wishing to learn if their favorite keepsake is a financial or sentimental "treasure", a donation of $10 for one item or $25 for three item is collected. This can be done via cash, check or credit card. We hope you will join us.

Boston’s Frozen Ponds Once Supplied the World With Ice (1800s)

Long before electric refrigerators, winter cold could power an entire industry.

In the nineteenth century, workers across New England harvested ice from frozen ponds and lakes. At Fresh Pond in Cambridge, near Boston, ice became a particularly important commercial resource.

Teams cut the frozen surface into blocks, moved the ice with specialized tools, and stored it in insulated icehouses. From there, it could be delivered locally or transported toward ports for shipment to distant markets.

The work was physically demanding and depended on the weather. A winter that failed to produce thick, reliable ice could threaten the season’s supply.

What looks today like an ordinary frozen pond once formed part of an international business that helped people preserve food in a world without household refrigeration.
