This is the second iteration of Q***r Voices, an exhibition presenting work that explores LGBTQ+ culture, stories, narratives, social constructs, and intersecting indentities. The exhibition is an effort to bring greater awareness and advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community. Works selected for exhibition are multidisciplinary and include a diverse representation of artists.

In addition, we are proud to present the work of student artists who participated in an arts advocacy project developed by the Horton Art Gallery in partnership with DCPC and Delta Pride Center, “LGBTQ+ Advocacy through the Arts”, funded in-part by a CTA LGBTQ+ Safety in Schools Grant. The project engaged a community of art students from the Delta College LGBTQ+ community and allies to participate in a series of fine art printmaking workshops instructed by artist Shanna Strauss. “Frey spent a lot of time reflecting on her childhood in nearby Lodi and what it meant to chase the California Dream, represented here as the automobile, in both CCAC Cadillac (Blue and White Plate) and Car Plate, California Dream Series (both 1972). Her childhood observations remained a life-long theme in her work, particularly farm life, the worker, and her father’s interaction with the land.”

Artist’s Work Statement by Cynthia de Bos, Director of Collections and Archives at the Artists’ Legacy Foundation which stewards the Viola Frey estate and manages the Viola Frey Archives.

“Frey’s creative process seen in the works in the exhibition include Planet Full of People (1969) that was created following the moon landing that was broadcast on television, captivating the imagination of a generation. In Frey’s example, she shows figures and animals, rockets and cars circling the globe in an undulating rhythm. Junkyard Planet (1970-71) explored humans’ impact on the earth through the threat of species extinction, with astronauts circling a goose and the gas-guzzling automobile cruising through outer space.”

Visions In Clay —
thru October 2

Several ceramic works by Viola Frey are presented in this year’s clay exhibition.  Frey is an Alum Emeritus of Delta College (1951-1953) where she took her first ceramics class with Professor Bruce Duke. After two years at Delta College, she transferred to California College of the Arts and Crafts, Oakland, where she studied ceramics and majored in painting, which Frey integrated to create a barrier-breaking artistic practice.

1) Viola Frey: Artist’s Mind/Studio/World (2024), is Frey’s first monograph, co-authored by Cynthia de Bos, Director of Collections and Archives at the Artists’ Legacy Foundation which stewards the Viola Frey estate and manages the Viola Frey Archives.

2) Viola Frey at CCAC where she studied and later taught ceramics.

3-4-5) Delta College Collegian news clipping of Frey’s Artist-In-Residence at Delta College, 1971, and the artwork she created during class demonstration. The ceramics class also organized an exhibition of Frey’s work at the Haggin Museum.

6) Cynthia de Bos speaking at Visions In Clay.

7-13) Frey installation photos at the Horton Gallery.
“One of the main concepts I have sought to develop is the element of play. Clues in the sculpture will lead eventually to a variety of meanings. Hats, shoes, and wheels, masks, and geese, to mention a few, are all clues. They are used as contemporary symbols, that are instantly recognized for what they are by their form but may have many different meanings depending on their inflection, size, distortion, and association. The completed works are three-dimensional puzzles where parts fit together.”

Serene Tide

Serene Tide, this ceramic sculpture of a monk figure seated within a wave is inspired by my meditation practice. In moments of stillness, I find a peace so deep it feels eternal, even surrounded by the ever-shifting tides of the world around us.

Hunted
Ceramic, electric kiln fired, low fire glaze and underglaze
42”h x 39”w x 8”d
$4500

Hunted captures a silver fox suspended in pursuit of a single perfect cherry. The fox becomes a portrait of instinct, ambition, and relentless pursuit, while the cherry symbolizes the ideals we chase desire, fulfillment, perfection, or success. Rather than depicting the outcome, the sculpture lingers in the moment before contact, where possibility is still alive and longing is often more powerful than possession.
