The Steinauer Community Heritage House received a grant from the Nebraska Historical Society Foundation, Roam Nebraska Impact Program to support the completion of interior galleries and museum-quality interpretive signage in the restored Steinauer Volunteer Fire Department Firehouse.
The grant marks a significant step toward completing a project that has united volunteers, donors, and community members in preserving an important piece of Steinauer’s history.
Originally serving the Village of Steinauer and surrounding rural communities, the firehouse was identified in a 1993 Nebraska State Historical Society report as significant to understanding the development of firehouses across Nebraska. The report recognized the building as an important example of rural volunteer firefighting and community service.
In 2024, the Steinauer Village Board offered the historic building to the museum. Faced with the possibility of demolition, the Steinauer Community Heritage House chose to preserve the structure and relocate it to museum grounds.
Over the past two years, volunteers and supporters have worked tirelessly to relocate, reconstruct, and restore the firehouse while maintaining its historic character. The building retains its original dimensions and much of its original tin siding and interior metal finishes.
Upon completion, the restored firehouse will serve as an interpretive gallery dedicated to the history of the Steinauer Volunteer Fire Department and the community it served. Exhibits will feature firefighting artifacts, local artwork, vintage maps, photographs, and historical objects that tell the story of Steinauer and the region’s early settlers.
The Nebraska Historical Society Foundation grant will help transform the restored building into an engaging educational experience through professionally designed exhibits and interpretive displays that share the stories of the firefighters, citizens, and volunteers who helped shape the community.
“This grant helps bring us one step closer to opening the firehouse as a permanent exhibit space,” said representatives of the Steinauer Community Heritage House. “We are grateful to the Nebraska Historical Society Foundation, our donors, and the many volunteers whose dedication has made this preservation project possible.”
Community support has been instrumental throughout the project. Through fundraising efforts, donations, and hundreds of volunteer hours, supporters have helped save a historic landmark that might otherwise have been lost.
Visitors will be invited to tour the restored firehouse gallery following completion of the interior exhibits and signage. The museum looks forward to sharing this unique piece of Nebraska history with residents, visitors, and future generations.
