Established in 1971, the Stamford Art Association is a nonprofit organization whose members include painters, sculptures, printmakers, and photographers. Our mission as a neighborhood arts organization is to provide a forum where emerging and professional artists can exhibit their work to the community and compete in juried shows.

A renowned color consultant, Birren devoted his career to understanding color, and in 1980, he endowed an award celebrating artists who use it in original and creative ways.

In 1980, Faber Birren, world-renowned color consultant, author of 27 books on color, endowed the Faber Birren Color Award Exhibit with awards for original and creative expression of color. The Faber Birren Color Award Exhibit has grown from a regional exhibit to one of international scope, encouraging artists in all media. This competition is the only artistic event devoted exclusively to the use of color.

JUROR INFO: Jordan Hillman is Assistant Curator of Art at the Bruce Museum. Before coming to the Bruce, she was an Invited Researcher in the laboratoire de l'histoire des arts et des représentations at the Université de Paris, Nanterre, and an Annual Subject Fellow at the Centre allemand d’histoire de l’art in Paris. She received her PhD in Art History from the University of Delaware in 2023 with a dissertation that examined the ways in which artists subverted police authority through image making in turn-of-the-century Paris, a subject she has explored in several publications. Previously, she was a curatorial research assistant in the Department of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs at the Baltimore Museum of Art. Her exhibition, Odilon Redon and the Specter of Science, will open at the Bruce in February 2027.

MEET OUR JUROR! Jordan Hillman is Assistant Curator of Art at the Bruce Museum. Before coming to the Bruce, she was an Invited Researcher in the laboratoire de l'histoire des arts et des représentations at the Université de Paris, Nanterre, and an Annual Subject Fellow at the Centre allemand d’histoire de l’art in Paris. This year the Stamford Art Association celebrates the 46th year of the Faber Birren National Color Award Exhibit in person at The Townhouse Gallery in Stamford as well as online.

The Faber Birren Color Award Exhibit pulls in artists internationally and is held for 6+ weeks annually. 40 artists are selected by the juror and their work is displayed at the Townhouse Gallery and online. Cash awards are funded by his family.

Submission Deadline: October 9th at 11:59 PM
Reception: Sun. Nov 15, 4-6
Show dates: November 15 - December 18, 2026

Prizes: Over $1600 in awards. First ($1000), 2nd, 3rd Prize, HM's as per the juror. Winners will be asked to participate in a video presentation.
