FAIR TIME! The community team is ready for the ribbon cutting ceremony this afternoon to officially open the DuQuoin State Fair! Stop by and see us inside the Governor’s tent in front of the grandstand to spin and win with our America 250 Illinois trivia prize wheel and sign-up to win family four-pack passes to visit the museum. We’ll see you at the fair weekdays 4pm-8pm and Noon-6pm weekends through Labor Day.

We want to thank all the amazing young people who volunteered at the ALPLM this summer through our VolunTEEN program. Ann Rutledge died at just 22 years old in 1835. She was 's friend in little New Salem, Ill., and legend says the two were in love. The evidence of romance is thin, but it's an interesting possibility to ponder.

in 1860, a riot erupted at a political rally in western Illinois. Hundreds of people battled with fists (and some clubs and rocks), and several people were hit by gunfire. The chief factors behind the Stone's Prairie Riot were plentiful alcohol and miscommunication that led thousands of supporters and Stephen Douglas supporters to gather at the same place.
