How do artists approach creating exhibition spaces? Why do they get started? How do they keep going? Join us for this wide-ranging conversation about artist-run exhibition spaces of all sizes, models, that span the country.
Followed by gallery reception at 5pm for Sun You’s solo and curated exhibitions
Dan Devening is an artist, educator, curator, writer and gallerist based in Chicago. He’s currently Professor, Adj. at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; was Senior Lecturer in the Department of Art Theory and Practice for 15 years and held full-time teaching positions at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of New Mexico. His paintings, works on paper and installations have been shown extensively including recent exhibitions in New York at Geary Contemporary, Launch F18, Apex Art and Printed Matter, Inc among other national venues. His essays and reviews have been featured in several recent publications including “Out of Place: Artists, Pedagogy and Purpose” edited by Zoë Charlton and Tim Doud and “Clay Pop, What’s New in Clay.” Devening currently owns and directs Devening Projects, a gallery project featuring exhibitions by emerging and established artists.
Critical Conversations is part of The Ford Family Foundation’s Visual Arts Program. It provides a collective space for artists and cultural producers that is rooted in exchange and inquiry. The program is led by the University of Oregon Department of Art’s Center for Art Research (CFAR) with collaborators Douglas F. Cooley Memorial Art Gallery, Reed College and Pacific Northwest College of Art at Willamette University..
