Founded in 1950 by a group of local artists including Maude Irvine Kerns, the Maude Kerns Art Center is a non-profit community center for the visual arts. Our goal is to promote and advocate appreciation and creation of the visual arts by offering a wide variety of exhibition programs, educational programs for all ages, facilities for artists, public events, and support for community artists.

The Center is dedicated to serving the public through major exhibitions, art classes, lectures, workshops, outreach programs, and intimate performances. We provide affordable, on-site co-operative studio space for working artists in the Club Mud Ceramics Studio. Understanding the importance of art education, the Center not only offers classes, workshops, and lectures, but also has internship programs for those interested in the arts and arts administration.

Mission: To nurture artistic expression and creativity in the individual and cultivate an appreciation and understanding of art and culture in our community.

Developing Voices in an Isolated World with Christopher St. John

Please join us for our new Artist Services class offered in a new bi-weekly setting. We are hoping to continue to offer the best content, while understanding that the world around us is rapidly changing.

This online class will use both presentation lectures, guided activities, and facilitated discussions to examine strategies for developing an original and fluent artistic voice. This time of quarantine has brought many people back to art making for social engagement, creative expression, and therapy. This class looks at difficult periods in art history and examines the work artists who excelled at creating a lasting body of work in the face of crisis and social unrest.

Students will need a large sketchbook and art making materials that are suited to their practice, such as pens, pencils, crayons, markers, and paints and brushes.

The six sessions include:

1. Gentle Compassion - Franz Marc and Henri Matisse
2. Grace and Form - Egon Schiele and the Spanish Flu
3. Spirit of Mind - Hilda af Klimt
4. Naturalism and Language - Henri de Favre
5. Disasters of War - Goya
6. The Symphonic Universe - Fred Tomaselli

For more Info and to Register, visit http://mkartcenter.org/virtual.html

If you have any questions, please email Amber at [email protected]

Eugene artists - Nurses need our gloves! Nurses at Willamette Valley Cancer Institute are asking for donations of nitrile (non-latex) gloves. Many of us use these to keep oil paints or other materials off our hands. If you have extra, please donate to help the WCVI staff take care of vulnerable people in our community. They're at 520 Country Club Rd in Eugene, 541-683-5001. If you can't go out or don't want to leave home, message me and I will pick up and deliver for you. Thanks everybody.

Do you limit the Dia de Los Muertos contributors to Hispanic folks? You know, the cultural appropriation thing? I think it would be a good idea.
Hi Maude Kerns Art Center! Maybe you know of some folks interested in volunteering to help paint a mural in Junction City? I had the fun of interviewing artist Roger Weise for the current "Boats and Bathers" show for KLCC's Viz City, the arts review program. I included a video of him on the radio station blog page as well as the audio link, script and this great portrait of him.
My interview with Roger Weise airs next Wed. July 26 on KLCC, NPR for Oregonians. 89.7 FM. Here is a fun video I put together of my visit to his studio.
