Edwards Place

Edwards Place This stunning antebellum mansion tells the story of social and cultural life in Abraham Lincoln’s Springfield, Illinois.

Owned and operated by the Springfield Art Association. Edwards Place must-see site for anyone who loves old houses, antiques, archaeology, or Abraham Lincoln! Edwards Place was the home of attorney Benjamin Edwards, youngest son of Governor Ninian Edwards and brother-in-law of Mary Lincoln’s sister Elizabeth. In the years before the Civil War prominent citizens such as Abraham Lincoln and Stephen

Douglas were entertained at lavish dinner parties and legislative receptions. Your guided tour of Edwards Place will take you back in time to experience social and family life in 19th century Springfield. This 4500 square foot mansion features nine rooms restored to their mid-19th century appearance, complete with original and local furnishings. You’ll see historic treasures including a rare piano which belonged to a colorful early Congressman, important portraits of 19th century Springfield residents, and artifacts from Abraham Lincoln’s in-laws, including the “courting couch” on which Lincoln and Mary Todd sat during the early days of their romance.

World History Game Night approaches! Today, our sneak peak is of a popular game from Ethiopia (and others) - mancala! This game uses strategy to see who can get more stones in their side of the board. Think you can strategize better than your friend? Put that confidence to the test!

World History Game Night is in less than a month! Another one of the games we are teaching is the Royal Game of the Goose, which originated in Italy. This board game gives Chutes and Ladders or Candyland vibes, and our boards are handmade!

We are very excited to announce that adult cooking classes are being added to our historical workshops in Edwards Place! These are taken from our popular "Commander in Chef" camp from this summer. Our Curator (not a professional chef) will be giving historical context for our meals.

On October 23, have Breakfast for Dinner with Teddy Roosevelt and Zachary Taylor.
On November 19, get Cozy Cooking with Barack Obama and Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Next month, World History Game Night comes to Edwards Place for the first time. We have most of our games lined up from 5 continents, so here's a preview of one:

Patolli - This is an Aztec race game that involves gambling and one very specific aspect - an offering must also be made to Xōchipilli out of the players' gambling items. The winner of each round wins this offering.

Of course, there are different rules and different versions that were played across Mesoamerica, but we will be providing the guidance for a specific set of rules that players will learn when they arrive.
