Southampton History Museum

Southampton History Museum The Southampton History Museum preserves and promotes the shared history and culture of greater Southampton, NY.

The Southampton History Museum was organized in 1898 and incorporated in 1910. In its early days, the Society collected and exhibited historical objects and documents relating to the history and development of Southampton, organized pageants, and gave lectures on antiques. By the 1990s the Rogers Mansion property had expanded to include 12 historic structures including a one-room schoolhouse, a 18

25 barn, and a 19th century paint shore, among others. The museum is open year-round with changing exhibits on historic topics, a research center, and extensive education programs for schoolchildren and adults. The Rogers Mansion contains an extensive research library and archives dedicated to the history of Southampton and its surrounding areas. The library currently contains over 800 volumes and the archives include a wide range of subjects from account books to family memorabilia. Come explore our research center and with the help of a research assistant see what you can discover. The admissions fee is $5 per person, free for members of the museum and children under 17 years of age.

🇺🇸 On this Memorial Day, we remember.

Over the past year, the Southampton History Museum has had the privilege of honoring more than 50 Southampton men and women who served in World War II through our exhibition Homefront to Battlefront: Southampton During WWII.

Of the 50 Southampton residents featured in the exhibition, 18 gave their lives for our country.

Among those was First Lieutenant Warren S. Lutz, a Southampton High School graduate who died at 23 when his B-17 was shot down over Germany on April 29, 1944.

Lutz’s medals, a Purple Heart and Military Merit Medal, were recently anonymously donated to our permanent collection after being discovered in a local home.

🌹 Today, we remember all who lost their lives in service to this country. We are grateful to every veteran, from every war, and to the families who carry their memory.

Pictured: Warren Lutz, Memorial Hall, The World War I Memorial in Agawam Park, The Soldier's and Sailor's Monument honoring Civil War veterans.

🌟Revolutionary. Schemer. Diplomat. Spy.

And then there were the women.

Sophia Baddeley, the most celebrated actress in London.

Lady Anne Stuart, the wife of another man who was rumored to have joined Sayre in his debtors’ prison quarters.

Elizabeth Noell, his first wife - a wealthy, English aristocratic.

Elizabeth Dorone, his second wife - a love match - they died a day apart.

This is Stephen Sayre.

Stephen Sayre’s American Revolution opens June 12th at the Southampton History Museum.
