HAPPY SPRING! After what felt like an extra long and cold winter recess, True North is finally re-opening! We are open today, April 17, from 10 to 3, and Friday and Saturday April 18 and 19, from 10 to 4. Stop by to see new work from artists Mary Pollak and Lee Thompson, as well as other art, fine craft, and gifts!
Going forward, we will be open most Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10 to 4, with a few exceptions. Check the website for updates: truenorthgallery.net

“Winter Messengers” by Seth Fitts
Just in time for Daylight Savings and the approaching solstitial darkness, Seth Fitts sent us this series of charming "Winter Messengers" mixed media paintings. Each Winter Messenger bears gifts of light to help us better weather the shortening days. Such a perfect gift for the winter holidays!

Happy Autumn from True North Gallery! We re-opened in September, and it's been so nice to see those of you who have stopped by! Thank you for your ongoing support and kind words. The best part of True North these past sixteen years has been meeting so many kindred spirits.

Our October hours—Wednesday through Saturday, 10AM to 4PM—will continue into early November, at which point we will add additional hours on Sundays.

One more post for today: Here are two of Fran Murphy's turned bowls in spalted maple. The “spalting” effect in the wood is created during decomposition. It is caused by naturally present fungi, which leave behind gorgeous patterns reminiscent of maps, drawings, mineral sedimentation, and more. Fran used a batch of spalted maple harvested locally—off the forest floor—right next door to True North! (Thank you, Elisabeth Cloutman!)

Montana artist-blacksmith Alexandra Paliwoda creates gorgeous metalwork that is forged using traditional and modern blacksmith techniques. True North is thrilled to represent her work. Featured here is her Alpine Cheese Knife and Heart Bowl.

When I first saw these magical porcelain river stone lights, I immediately thought of the following words, attributed to a Mi’kmaq chant. (The Mi’kmaq are an Indigenous people of the Northeastern Woodlands, native to the areas of Canada’s Atlantic Provinces and parts of northeastern Maine.)

“The forest sings itself into darkness
and the stone holds a light.
We can feel it in our palms.
It is the same light animals leave
on the stones along the river
where they pass in the night.”

Designed by Sarah Blienet, they are handmade in small batches in matte porcelain, battery powered, and sold in sets of 3.

True North Gallery will be open tomorrow, Friday 9/20 and Saturday, 9/21, from 11am to 4pm.

We are slowly emerging from our summer estivation (like hibernation, but during warm periods). The cooler nights and crisper mornings are getting us geared up for our fall hours, which will be posted here and on our website by the end of the month.
