ARTIST STATEMENT
Because the creative process, to me, is a primary part of being human, reflections on other artist’s works are key to my own discovery. Influences have been Kathy Kollwitz, Paul Cezanne, Degas, Hoffman, Matisse, Rembrandt and many others. My paintings come from oil pastel, pastel, charcoal, colored pencil, and pencil drawings that explore a feeling of color, line, and shape that

one of the drawings may suggest. I often use contrasting colors and relate them to their surroundings by listening to a feeling inside which guides me to what is needed. Starting with realistic/natural forms, elements are then abstracted from the original image toward new mixtures that take on their own life. The journey of this discovery to the final picture is often a surprise to me. It is building relationships between lines, shapes and colors that create a vibrant image of texture and color.
