A Vision Re-Imagined opens Saturday.

New work by Ellen Hallie Schiff. In her own words:

“This work has been inspired by a visit to Pompeii and alludes to it, but I didn’t want to use the word Pompeii in the title or painting titles. I wanted the titles to be more open so that viewers could more fully experience what they are looking at and not be led by the hand, so to speak. So the paintings could be about Pompeii, or they could be about something else.”

Opening reception Saturday, October 24, at 2pm.
Free, no list, and you are welcome to bring somebody.

A whale, cut open where the brain would be.

Susan made this for Mystic Seaport. Sapele mahogany, stainless steel, aluminum wind chimes. Nine feet across, about a quarter the size of a female s***m whale.

The head is hollow. She cut it open the way the Yankee whalers did.

What she put back inside is a set of chimes, tuned to A and E. The steel rod tracing the air around it follows the pattern of echolocation, the sound a whale uses to find its way through water it cannot see through.

So the thing the whalers took out, she replaced with sound.

She finishes every sculpture two weeks before it is due. Not because she runs late. Because she does not. Those two weeks are for watching it.

“I want to see it in the morning light. I want to see it in the evening light. I want to see the shadow. I want to see how it is going to be in the rain.”

Ask her how it feels when a piece is done and she will not say relieved.

She says complete.

A whale, cut open where the brain would be.

Susan made this for Mystic Seaport. Sapele mahogany, stainless steel, aluminum wind chimes. Nine feet across, about a quarter the size of a female s***m whale.

Changeover day.

You will not see most of what happens today. Work coming off the walls, bubble wrap on the floor, ladders, nothing hung, the whole room in pieces for most of this week.

Then on Saturday you walk in and it looks like it was always that way.

That gap is the job.

Susan, on what decides which work makes it onto these walls:

“Technique can be taught to almost anybody. Having something to say cannot.”

Changeover day.

You will not see most of what happens today.
Work coming off the walls, bubble wrap on the floor, ladders, nothing hung, the whole room in pieces for most of this week.

That is a wrap on Unnoticed.

Thank you to Margaret DeLima for two weeks of work that rewarded anybody who stood still in front of it.

And thank you to everybody who came through the door, especially the ones who drove a long way to get here. We noticed.

Tomorrow is the last day of Margaret's show, and on Monday we take it all down.

People think the hard part of a gallery is hanging the paintings. It is not. It is deciding where somebody's eye goes when they walk in.

I learned that from the man who does the metal work with me. No training at all. He walked in, looked at what I had laid out and said, that does not look good together.

Some work shouts. This one waits for you to stop.

In Margaret DeLima’s Unnoticed, four young women share a small pool of light. One lies back. One rests her chin in her hand. Nobody is performing. It is the kind of moment we pass every day without a second look.

Today, Friday, we are open 11 to 7. Tomorrow, Saturday, 11 to 3.
