Janice N. Hooser, age 87, of Wadsworth, formerly of Rittman, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at Village of St. Edward in Fairlawn, following a period of declining health.
Janice was born on May 24, 1939, in Shreve, Ohio, to the late Clarence and Clarice (Cutnaw) Fox. She graduated from Shreve High School in 1957. Janice met the love of her life, Garland E. Hooser, at the Wayne County Fair in 1955. They were married on June 28, 1957, in Wooster, and shared 69 years of marriage together.
Janice formerly worked for Hudson Medical Supply in Wadsworth before beginning a career in banking. She worked as a teller and loan officer for several local banks and retired in 1995.
Janice was a longtime member of Northside Christian Church. She enjoyed playing BINGO and euchre, scrapbooking, working on computers, and doing crossword puzzles. She especially treasured the time she spent with her classmates and, above all, her family. Some of her happiest memories were made on family bike rides and during bus tours with her beloved husband, Garland.
She will be deeply missed by her husband, Garland, of Wadsworth; two daughters, Vicki Morrison of Orrville and Judy (Dennis) Shultz of Wadsworth; five grandchildren, Brittany (Ben) Fravel of Akron, Matthew Morrison of Orrville, Brooke Morrison of Parma Heights, Sarah (Jimmy) Young of Wadsworth, and William Bradford of Medina; and four great-grandchildren, Brody, Brynn, Henry, and Vivian.
In addition to her parents, Janice was preceded in death by her son, Todd Hooser; brothers, Ted and Donald Fox; sisters, Carol Morr and Marilyn Morris; infant brother, Norman Fox; and brother-in-law, Paul Hooser.
Friends may call on October 10, 2026, from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at Auble-Gillman Funeral Home, 360 W. Sunset Dr., Rittman.
Funeral services will follow on October 10, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor Cliff Morris officiating. Burial will take place at Rittman Cemetery.

Wayne County fair-style BBQ chicken returns to Shreve

Residents visiting the Shreve Wide Garage Sales on Oct. 3 will have a chance to purchase a longtime local favorite when the County Line Historical Society of Wayne/Holmes holds its annual Wayne County Fair-style BBQ chicken drive-thru fundraiser.
The event will begin at 10:30 a.m. and continue until sold out, according to a community announcement. Organizers will offer half-chicken meals and dinners from the drive-thru at Shreve Auto Repair, 298 N. Market St., Shreve.
The fundraiser supports the historical society's efforts to maintain and operate its museum and preserve local history.

The announcement traces the barbecue tradition back to the early 1960s when Nina Miller and the late Harold "Hank" Miller attended the Ohio State Fair and sampled the chicken recipe that would later become a staple in Shreve.
After obtaining the recipe, Hank Miller brought it back to the community and introduced the idea as a fundraiser for the Shreve Businessmen's Association. The group began serving the chicken during Fourth of July activities held behind the former Shreve School in conjunction with an annual softball tournament.

The concept later expanded to the Wayne County Fair. According to the announcement, Miller approached Max Kister, then secretary of the Wayne County Fair, about serving the chicken during the fair and received approval.
Henry "Junior" Schlabach, who owned a Shreve restaurant at the time, agreed to cook the chicken. Miller and several employees also helped build the pavilion still used for the operation at the fairgrounds, according to the announcement.

As the fundraiser grew, Marty Hershberger became involved in the mid-1970s and shared responsibilities with Verton Yoder. After Yoder retired, Hershberger assumed the primary cooking role and continues in that position today, according to the announcement.

Larry is a 1971 Triway High School graduate. He grew up in Shreve most of his life. He and his family have been very supportive of the CLHS museum. He loved the bbq chicken fundraisers we have semi-annually, Wayne Co. fair-style. Peace, comfort and sympathy to his family and friends.
