Nikola Tesla wanted to turn the whole Earth into a giant conductor.

This diagram explains the idea with a simple analogy. On the left, a hand pump pushes on a flexible ball, and every pulse is felt at every point on the sphere. On the right, a tower at the top of the globe sends energy through the Earth to every point on it.

Nikola believed he could send power and signals around the world using stationary waves vibrating at the Earth’s resonant frequency. Wardenclyffe was meant to be the first of 30 stations and the hub of that worldwide system.

That bold spirit of invention is why Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe exists: to develop the site of Nikola’s last remaining laboratory into a global science center that preserves his legacy and inspires the next generation of innovators. ⚡

Here's a riddle from our tour guides. If you went back about 125 years and stood in the center of the tower base at Wardenclyffe, you wouldn't be standing there at all. You'd be 120 feet down, at the bottom of a shaft.

Nikola Tesla's transmitting tower rose 187 feet above that shaft and was topped by a steel dome. Below ground, a spiral staircase wound down the shaft, and tunnels connected the tower to the brick laboratory. Nikola hoped the tower would send signals and power around the world without wires.

The tower was never finished and was torn down in 1917. The huge gneiss (pronounced "nice") blocks it stood on are still here.

See them for yourself on the Picture the Past tour before the season ends November 15. Tours run Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM. Reservations required.

Who’s guiding you through Wardenclyffe after dark? Meet Long Island Paranormal Investigators (LIPI).

Michael Cardinuto and Robert Levine founded LIPI in 2003. More than 20 years later, their team is bringing its experience to the grounds of Nikola Tesla’s last remaining laboratory.

On Friday, October 16 and Friday, October 30, LIPI investigators will lead small groups around the laboratory grounds with audio recorders, cameras and other equipment, and share the site’s history and legends along the way.

Two sessions each night: 7:30–8:30 PM or 9:00–10:00 PM. Ages 15+ recommended.

At the Chicago World’s Fair, Nikola Tesla’s AC system won the War of the Currents.

At the World’s Columbian Exposition, Nikola’s alternating current system proved better than Edison’s direct current. The fair is where that long struggle ended.

Nikola didn’t stop there. In 1901, construction began on Wardenclyffe’s tower, part of his vision for a worldwide system that could send signals and power wirelessly to every part of the globe.

That bold spirit of invention is why Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe exists: to develop the site of Nikola’s last remaining laboratory into a global science center that preserves his legacy and inspires the next generation of innovators. ⚡

Next time you visit Nikola's statue, look at his hands.

The bronze statue of Nikola Tesla at Wardenclyffe was a gift from the President of Serbia in 2013. It's modeled on a newspaper photo of Nikola in his New York office in 1916, holding pieces of one of his inventions. It's believed to be his "Ship's Log," a device that could determine a ship's latitude and longitude by measuring the length of the electric waves it sent out. He patented it in 1919.

Your TV remote has an ancestor, and it was a boat.

On November 8, 1898, Nikola Tesla was granted U.S. Patent No. 613,809, "Method of and Apparatus for Controlling Mechanism of Moving Vessels or Vehicles." In plain English, it was a boat he could steer from across the room using radio waves, with no wires.

At the time, it must have looked like magic. Today we call it remote control, and it's in our toys, drones and TVs.

On our Wizard of Wardenclyffe Family Tour, kids play "Sorcery or Science?", race in the War of the Currents and decide for themselves whether Nikola was really a wizard. Tours run Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through November 15. Reservations required.

You asked, we answered: Investigate Wardenclyffe edition. 🔦

We've gotten quite a few questions about this event, so here are the answers to the ones we hear most.

What is it? An after-dark investigation on the grounds of Nikola Tesla's last remaining laboratory, guided by Long Island Paranormal Investigators (LIPI). You'll use audio recorders, cameras and other equipment as you explore.

When? Friday, October 16 or Friday, October 30. Two sessions each night: 7:30–8:30 PM or 9:00–10:00 PM.

Can I bring my kids? We recommend it for ages 15 and up. If you think your younger kids are game, they're welcome with an adult.

What should I wear? It's outdoors after dark, so wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather.

How much? $60 per person. Members save 15%.

Got another question? Ask it in the comments.

Nikola Tesla could make an egg stand on its end and spin, without touching it.

To audiences who barely understood electricity, it looked like sorcery. It was science. Nikola built his "Egg of Columbus" to show how his induction motor worked. When he switched it on, a rotating magnetic field lifted the egg onto its pointy end and set it spinning. Demonstrations like this are why some people called him a wizard.

Find more science that feels a bit like magic at Spooky Science at Wardenclyffe on Saturday, October 24, 11 AM to 4 PM. Nikola Tesla-inspired experiments, live animals from Sweetbriar Nature Center, a costume dance party and a Nikola Tesla look-alike contest. Costumes encouraged!
