Our Student Artist of the Month is ceramic artist, scupltor and educator Steve Belz, whose work explores the intersection of contemporary life and nature. With roots in Environmental Studies and Fine Arts, Steve blends thoughtful inquiry with quiet beauty. ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŽจ

Born in Olympia, Steve spent over a decade in a small Colorado mountain town working as a potter and carpenter before earning his M.F.A. at Kansas State University. He returned to Washington in 2015 to lead the ceramics program at Peninsula College, where heโ€™s now a tenureโ€‘track professor. His work is exhibited widely, and he continues to teach and share his craft across the country.

Meet Steve and see his art in person this Friday at First Friday Art Walk. Hope to see you there!

Thereโ€™s something about September on the Olympic Peninsula ~ the mountains sharpen, the air begins to change, and the days begin to get a bit shorter.

From all of us at Blue Whole Gallery, welcome to a new season, a new month of art, inspiration, and the beauty that surrounds us.

Inspiration comes from all sorts of places, but for our own Shayna Robnett Art ~ oil painter and the heartbeat of Lilly's Safe Haven ~ it often struts right past her studio window in full feathered flair. Her animals have a talent for sparking ideas, and nothing kicks off a painting session quite like a perfectly fluffed chicken caboose. With muses like these, creativity doesnโ€™t just flowโ€ฆit sashays.

From spark to spectacle, our metal artist, Gary Roberts, has been up to mischief again. What began as a humble hunk of steel quickly found itself cut, bent, coaxed, hammered, welded, and sweetโ€‘talked into becoming something far more interesting. Many steps, countless sparks, and one very determined maker later, the final piece emergesโ€”part sculpture, part alchemy, and entirely worth the mess it took to get here. Meet "King Olaf, A Great Dane!"

"Sometimes a piece of art makes you stop because you want to know the story. The quiet, monochromatic greys and shadowy landscape in Sheri Cox Whetstine's piece draw me toward the woman standing alone. I find myself wondering, 'Is she okay? Where is she going? And why is she alone?'"

Weโ€™ve noticed something lately ~ Timothy O'Connell III keeps catching our gaze. Three of his paintings gather eyes that seem to hold a secret ~ ancient, familiar, and not yet willing to reveal, with a way of keeping your gaze a little longer than you expect. Once you start, itโ€™s hard to look away. Which one has *๐™”๐™Š๐™* in its sights?

August featured glass artist, Sheri Whetstine, says "Glass is a mesmerizing mediumโ€”both delicate and strong, predictable yet full of surprises. In the kiln, a simple pane transforms into art, shaped by intent or chance. I may craft with precision, arranging each piece deliberately, yet the kiln always holds its own mysteries. I am endlessly drawn to experimentation, refining techniques, and absorbing wisdom from fellow artists. Learning is a constant journey, with each day offering new possibilities and inspiration."
